Dozens of motorcycles were on area roads this past weekend, with the Junction City Harley Owner’s Group holding its annual poker run and scavenger hunt, with proceeds going to the Muscular Dystrophy association. $2,800 was raised. Debbie Auld serves as the group’s assistant director and says the Junction City group has members from throughout Kansas, including Wichita, Salina, Manhattan, Wamego, Marysville, Manhattan, and Riley. The motorcycles began their Sunday route in Junction City, travelling through Riley and Pottawatomie Counties before ending up back in Grandview Plaza.

The longest tenured men’s golf coach in the Big 12 conference, K-State’s Tim Norris announced his retirement at the end of the 2013-14 season during Sunday night’s Colbert-Fogler benefit.  Norris took over a Wildcat program in 1997 that hadn’t finished in the top half of its conference in 28 years, and led it to four NCAA regionals during his tenure.  He oversaw the opening of Colbert Hills Golf Course, along with a new clubhouse and training facility. The National Science Foundation has named Kansas State University as its lead institution for the world’s first Industry/University Cooperative Research Center on wheat. The premier center, named the NSF I/UCRC Wheat Genetics Resource Center, is the first National Science Foundation-established research center for any crop plant. The center will focus on improving the food production and disease resistance of wheat and other crop plants, as well as serve as a training hub for graduate students and young researchers. DETROIT (AP) Miguel Cabrera hit his 40th home run and had an RBI single to help Max Scherzer become baseball’s first 18-game winner this season as the Detroit Tigers beat the Kansas City Royals 6-3 to win the five-game series. The reigning Triple Crown winner became the third player since 1921 to have at least 40 homers and 120 RBIs while batting .350 or better through 116 games. (AP) Pro Bowl running back Jamaal Charles returned to Chiefs practice with no hesitation Sunday despite a lingering right foot strain that caused soreness to travel halfway up his leg. Charles spoke to reporters before hitting the practice field for the first time since last Monday, when he stepped on a teammate during the workout. 27 area residents gathered at Fancy Creek Shooting Range, Sunday afternoon, to Sight their rifles in preparation for the 11th annual Tuttle Creek Youth/ADA Deer Hunt. During the afternoon, hunters participated in a safety orientation, practiced their shot, and dug into a bbq pork supper. A motor vehicle accident, resulting in injuries, occurred on Sunday afternoon around 3:45. Riley County Police dispatchers told KMAN, a one vehicle accident occured just two miles west of Riley, in the 14500 block of Madison Avenue. Midwest-out of Wichita was called in and a person was life flighted. Dispatch advised people to stay away from the area until the wreck was cleared, even though the wreck reportedly occured off the road. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) An autopsy report says the 24-year-old suspect killed in a 32-hour standoff with police in Wichita was high on meth and painkillers and died of multiple gunshot wounds. Police said Jared Lee Woosypiti had been wanted for attempted first-degree murder in a July stabbing in Derby when the standoff began July 10, shortly after Woosypiti fired multiple rounds inside a Kmart while trying to rob the pharmacy.
