Manhattan High boys basketball head coach Tim Brooks won’t be on the bench for the Indians’ game tomorrow night at Emporia, according to MHS administrators. “At this time, the team is under the direction of Shane Sieben and Benji George while administration deals with a personnel issue,” Manhattan High athletic director Mike Marsh said. “I have total confidence in their abilities.” MHS officials gave no details about what will happen beyond the game tomorrow against the Spartans. A Junction City man has been sentenced in connection with an animal cruelty case that received a lot of attention around Thanksgiving. William Lemieux was sentenced in Geary county district court to one year but granted probation for 12 months. Lemieux is also to pay costs, not to have contact with his girlfriend, is not allowed to have pets, and must obtain a domestic violence assessment and drug and alcohol evaluation and to follow all recommendations. Lemieux was arrested in mid-November after his girlfriend found her cat dead in a bag placed in a trash bin near their home. Assistant…
A Clyde resident says he plans to run as a Republican against incumbent Congressman Tim Huelskamp. The Salina Journal reports that Alan LaPolice, who grew up on a dairy farm in north-central Kansas, plans to kick off his campaign for the 1st Congressional District on Feb. 22 in Concordia. Huelskamp, also a Republican, won the seat in the strongly GOP U.S. House district in 2010 and faced no opposition in seeking re-election in 2012. A teleconference on Friday was able to provide a few answers as the legislative session is in full swing. Governor Sam Brownback took the lead and talked about some of the issues he has been working on including meetings with the Kansas Water Authority and taking the lesser prairie chicken off of the threatened list. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) The Royals agreed to terms with left-hander Bruce Chen on one-year deal Thursday, giving them a veteran pitcher comfortable as a long reliever or in the starting rotation. Kansas City had yet to announce the contract, which includes a mutual option for 2015. The Manhattan High girls basketball team opened up the 19th annual Mid America Classic at McPherson in convincing fashion with a 60-24 win in the first round over Hays. The Tribe defense was key throughout the ballgame, forcing 18 first half turnovers and a total of 30 in the game. MHS was paced by Darby Price with a stout double-double; 14 points and 14 rebounds. Updated:Friday morning Names and vehicle information were provided overnight by the Kansas Highway Patrol, regarding Thursday evening’s accident two miles north of Manhattan on Highway 24. KHP confirms the accident, which occurred shortly before five p.m., occurred when a 2009 Toyota Corrola driven by Carson Faessler, 19, of Lodgepole, Nebraska was eastbound and went left of center, striking a 2004 Dodge Dakota head on. The truck was driven by Donald Currey, 59, of Riley. Both had seatbelts on. This is the reason why having lorry or truck insurance is important.
