Abilene Products Co., Inc., has agreed to pay a $15,290 civil penalty to settle alleged violations of the Clean Air Act (CAA) at its fertilizer facility in Abilene, Kan. As part of its settlement agreement with EPA Region 7, the company will spend an additional $75,370 to complete a supplemental environmental project. The settlement stems from an inspection that revealed Abilene Products failed to develop and implement a Risk Management Program for its fertilizer facility that complied with the requirements of the chemical accident prevention regulations. This $11,000 grant will be used to purchase upgrades to the Cox Communications Technology Lab which will supplement learning and tutoring at the Boys & Girls Club of Manhattan 5th Street location. Update Thursday morning: For a couple of hours Wednesday afternoon, Ogden residents were warned to stay away from the 200 blocks of 10th and 11th Streets and more details were released by Riley County Police early Wednesday evening. An Ogden man was taken into custody following the incident, reported to be domestic-related involving a husband and wife. The man is identified on Thursday morning’s RCPD arrest report as Armando Lopez, 22, of Ogden, who faces possible charges of aggravated battery, battery, and criminal restraint. Second-fourth grades, seventh grade, and twelfth grade were all down just slightly from last year, and the rest were above last year’s enrollment numbers. While working on the exterior of the Holiday Inn near K-State Campus, a worker fell approximately two stories and was taken to Mercy Regional Health. KMAN spoke to Riley County EMS Director, Larry Couchman, who said the man is being treated in Mercy’s emergency wing, but he is stable. Couchman was unaware of what job the man was doing at the Holiday Inn, but said he was possibly a contractor. Police in a rural area of Northeast Louisiana killed the gunman who took three hostages in a bank on Tuesday. The gunman shot two of the hostages. One later died.
Former K-State student-athlete and high jumper Erik Kynard qualified for the high jump finals at the 14th IAAF World Outdoor Championships in Moscow earlier this afternoon (Tuesday). Kynard’s final jump of 2.26 meters (7-05.00) tied for 2nd highest among all participants in the qualifying round and he was the only American to qualify for the final. Kynard qualified for the World Championships in June when he became the first Wildcat to win a high jump title at the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
