More evidence and testimony was heard Friday morning in the trial of Lavertis Horne concerning a home invasion which according to Riley County Police resulted in a Kansas State University student being shot. Horne is facing multiple charges including aggravated robbery and aggravated battery. At about 10:30 am, the jury was released for their lunch break and instructed to return at 11:45 am to hear closing arguments. KMAN will continue to bring you the latest as the trial continues.

Number three out of a list of more than 100 is impressive, and that’s where Manhattan ended up in this year’s ranking by Forbes for “Best Small Place For Business and Careers.” That’s up from last year’s fifth place ranking, but down a bit from the number one achievement in 2011. Life is good for Kansas State University students, who were once again named among the happiest students in the nation, according to the 2014 edition of the Princeton Review’s “The Best 378 Colleges.” The book only recognizes 15 percent of the nation’s 2,500 four-year colleges and four international colleges as being the best in higher education. The list includes detailed profiles of the colleges with rating scores for all schools in eight categories. Danny Duffy made his first start on the mound in over a year after recovering from Tommy John surgery. At times he looked phenomenal, and at times he looked spotty. Duffy needed 90 plus pitches just to get over three innings of work, he did strike out seven during that span. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Attorneys for a Manhattan doctor accused of having employees illegally dispense prescriptions are trying again to persuade a federal judge that he won’t flee if he’s released on bail. Dr. Michael P. Schuster’s lawyers said in a federal court filing Wednesday that the Manhattan doctor’s wife has moved $474,000 from overseas accounts back to the U.S. since May. The defense also said the couple is willing to surrender personal property and the deeds to their real estate holdings. At Wednesday’s Manhattan Ogden school board meeting, a decision was made on which direction the budget for the 2013-2014 school year will go, but the decision was far from unanimous as it ended with a split vote of 4-3.  The three opposing Option 4 of the budget was board members Aaron Estabrook, Darrel Edie, and Leah Fliter. ARKANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) A south-central Kansas police chief is leaving his department Sept. 23 for a job in Central America. Sean Wallace has been with the Arkansas City Police Department for 20 years, the last seven as chief. Wallace told KAKE-TV on Wednesday he has a one-year contract with the U.S. State Department to serve as a community policing adviser in Guatemala. Wallace is a fluent Spanish-speaker and has provided international police training in the past. His wife, Robin Wallace, is an assistant principal at Derby High School and will remain with the district for the next academic year.…

ATCHISON, Kan. (AP) Authorities in northeast Kansas say a small alligator spotted in a lake was shot and wounded in the snout before it could be rescued. Fishermen spotted the 3-foot-long alligator on Saturday in Atchison County Lake. Sheriff’s deputies monitored the animal until the Atchison County Humane Society helped catch it Monday using a dog kennel and other tools. KMBC-TV reports that investigators learned of the shooting while arranging to transfer the alligator to a sanctuary near Lee’s Summit, Mo.
