HAYS, Kan. (AP) Union Pacific crews are starting to clear out tons of chicken meal that spilled in Hays after a mid-July train derailment. The meal, destined for use in making cat food, has been giving off a powerful odor that’s drawn complaints from residents of the northwest Kansas community. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Police say two alert employees caught and held a man who allegedly was trying to burglarize a Cargill plant in Topeka. Topeka police Sgt. Steve Roth says the employees saw the man break into a fenced-in area that holds heavy equipment on Tuesday night. When the employees ran into the area, the man was “messing with” a utility vehicle. Roth says the man took off running but the employees caught him, subdued him and then held him until police arrived. PITTSBURG, Kan. (AP) A man who shot a fleeing suspect after a home invasion in Pittsburg has accepted a plea deal. Kyle S. Taggart, 28, was scheduled to go on trial Tuesday on an attempted murder charge. But court records indicate he entered a plea of no contest to aggravated battery on July 31. Prosecutors will recommend he serve 30 days in jail and then be on probation for four years. Taggart shot Mitchell E. Owens, 19, of Kansas City, as Owens and two other men were fleeing from a robbery at a Pittsburg home in April 2012. Taggart was…

Riley County Police Department Captain Kurt Muldrop reports that Part 1 Crimes are significantly down, but he does says that a certain crime – vehicle burglary – seems to be on the rise.  Muldrop points out the most affected areas are communities in the northwest part of Manhattan, east and south of CiCo Park, and north of popular bar and shopping district, Aggieville.  Muldrop says he does believe these crimes may increase as many students are returning to the area – a number of them with packed vehicles.  Muldrop cautions all residents to remove valuable items from the vehicle or from sight…

A two vehicle accident at Highway 24 and Colombian had traffic slowed down at 5:30  Wednesday evening. A Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Department official indicates there were no serious injuries, although an extrication was necessary. The accident had traffic down to one lane westbound, where the accident occurred, and also caused a slow down in eastbound lanes. UPDATE: An official from the Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Department has confirmed all road areas are cleared and traffic is open and no longer delayed.  As previously stated, no injuries were reported.
