Witnesses continued to take the stand Wednesday morning during the Levertis Horne jury trial.  Horne is accused in a home invasion case, which resulted in a Kansas State University student being shot. Officers and 911 dispatchers were questioned, including Riley County Police Officer, Rich Lewis.  Prosecuting State Attorney, Barry Disney began by asking Lewis questions about a cell phone used the night of the incident back in October of 2012.  The cell phone appeared to be that of Levertis Horne.  Disney asked Lewis about several screenshots of texts and calls Lewis had taken of the phone when he originally investigated…

Wamego’s 2014 budget was approved. At Tuesday’s City Commission meeting, Mayor Bob Morse opened the Public Hearing to answer taxpayer objections to the proposed use of funds and the amount of ad valorem tax for the 2014 budget. As required, the budget was published, along with the notice of hearing. With no questions from the public, a motion was made to adopt the 2014 City of Wamego budget as published. The match up was set up for a Royals victory. James Shields pitching for Kansas City and Minnesota sending out a 27 year old Canadian left hander making his major league debut. It was not the case last night as Shields struggled early on and Andrew Albers sat down the Royals in a 7-0 Twins victory. Shields pitched six innings and gave up seven runs on eight hits. A consensus over a flat mill levy didn’t mean the Manhattan city commission had an easy night during Tuesday night’s budget session. Commissioner Wynn Butler argued over points on the budget concerning a large increase in the social service advisory board’s budget for 2014, and several other items within the previously published city budget.  Butler  was able to work with the other commissioners to  decrease items such as ATA’s on-demand budget from 5% to 1.7%,  and leverage those gains in the general fund into the road maintenance fund. OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (AP) Police in northeast Kansas are looking into a possible sighting of a man who escaped custody in Arkansas, but they haven’t been able to confirm the report. The Kansas City Star reports someone called Overland Park police Monday to say they saw a vehicle that had a license plate associated with Derrick Estell. Estell escaped July 28 from a jail in Garland County, Ark., and he was believed to have been headed to southwest Missouri’s Dallas County. ATCHISON, Kan. (AP) A northeast Kansas sheriff wants to know who dumped a small alligator in a lake, where it was spotted by fishermen. KAIR-FM reports the group of anglers made the discovery Saturday while fishing at Atchison County Lake. They alerted the lake’s caretaker, who called the sheriff’s department. Sheriff Jack Laurie says deputies and members of the Atchison County Humane Society caught the alligator Monday using a net, a dog kennel and other tools. SHARON SPRINGS, Kan. (AP) A sinkhole estimated to be about 90 feet deep is drawing so many curiosity seekers to western Kansas that the landowner is pleading for people to stay away. Wallace County officials say the sinkhole, which is 200 to 300 feet wide, was discovered July 31 in a pasture several miles north of Sharon Springs. Rex Buchanan, interim director of the Kansas Geological Survey, says the sinkhole occurred naturally and is not caused by groundwater depletion or oil or gas drilling.
