In a last-minute bid to stave off a new chapter in the East-West crisis over Ukraine, Secretary of State John Kerry warned Russia on Thursday that it faces immediate and “very serious” sanctions if it annexes Ukraine’s strategic Crimea region. The warnings from the West served as a last attempt to head off a confrontation over Crimea, which holds a vote Sunday on whether to break off from Ukraine and perhaps join Russia.
A Federal charge was filed Thursday in a Manhattan bank robbery. According to U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom’s office, Ronald David Brown, Jr. (39), who is in custody at CCA’s Leavenworth Detention Center, was charged with one count of bank robbery. The indictment alleges that on Nov. 27th of last year, Brown robbed the Kansas State Bank at 1101 Bluemont Avenue in Manhattan. If convicted, Brown faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison and a fine up to $250,000. A St. Mary’s man entered a plea of no contest Thursday in Pottawatomie County District court to distribution of methamphetamine. Samuel Greidanus was then found guilty, with a sentencing set for April 24th. He was also advised he will have a duty to register pursuant to the offender registration act. Greidanus was arrested in July of 2012 during a traffic stop in Wamego. He initially was taken into custody for driving while suspended. Riley County Commissioners found out about Senate Bill 436 Wednesday, and therefore discussed the piece of legislation during their meeting on Thursday. The proposed legislation would amend the statute involving police department director positions to be elected instead of appointed by the Law Board. Commission Chair, Robert Boyd said “we were surprised to find out it had come out of the Senate, because it hadn’t been talked about before. An Ogden man was arrested on a failure to appear in court warrant Thursday. Casey Lindley, 26, was arrested while in the 500 block of 6th Street in Manhattan at approximately 11:40 AM. Lindley’s failure to appear warrant involved an original offense of fleeing or attempting to elude a law enforcement officer. ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting that the New Orleans Saints have traded former K-State running back Darren Sproles to the Philadelphia Eagles for a fifth round draft pick. The Saints initially told Sproles they would release him, but decided instead to trade the nine-year veteran because there was so much interest from teams looking to acquire him. In three years with the Saints, Sproles gained a total of 1,067 rushing yards, 1,981 receiving yards and 21 touchdowns. He set an NFL single-season record for all-purpose yards with 2,696 in 2011.However, Sproles played in only about 33 percent of the Saints’ offensive…
