TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Kansas is shutting down a Topeka nursing home, saying that it failed to comply with state and federal health and safety regulations. The Topeka Capital-Journal reports the Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services’ revocation of the Topeka Community Healthcare Center’s license will require its 55 residents to find new homes by September. The department says the center consistently failed to achieve “substantial compliance” with standards since September 2010. For the past five months, the Manhattan Ogden school district and the NEA have been working to come up with their agreed upon contract for the 2013-2014 school year and as of Thursday, they have a tentative agreement. Unemployment numbers for the Manhattan metropolitan area remained the same, according to figures just released by the Kansas Department of Labor. The 5.7 percent rate for June is the same as May of this year, but up just a little from last year’s June number of 5.6 percent. The metro area includes Riley, Pottawatomie and Geary Counties. The city of Manhattan shows a 4.8 percent rate, down a tenth of a percentage from May but the same as last year. A national television audience will witness K-State basketball’s return to Wichita against Gonzaga on Saturday, December 21st. The Wildcats and Bulldogs will tip off at 2:30pm at Intrust Bank Arena, and will be shown by ESPN2. K-State claimed their first Big 12 title during a 27-win campaign last season. Gonzaga earned their first #1 seed in the NCAA tournament a year ago, winning the West Coast Conference title while posting a 32-3 record. We have received additional information from the Riley County Police Department. A day after being named to the watch list for the Doak Walker Award, K-State senior running back John Hubert has been put up for the Walter Camp Award. Collin Klein was a finalist for the Walter Camp last season, which is given to the best player in college football. (AP) The Kansas City Royals placed infielder Chris Getz and reliever Kelvin Herrera on the taxi squad Thursday in anticipation of recalling them Friday, and optioned infielder Johnny Giavotella and reliever Everett Teaford to Triple-A Omaha. The club also assigned infielder Pedro Ciriaco, claimed off waivers Tuesday from San Diego, to Omaha. Getz opened the season as the Royals’ starting second baseman, but was optioned to Omaha on June 22. On the very day of Colonel William Clark’s retirement and change of command ceremony, the Flint Hills Regional Council has announced Clark will serve as the new Executive Director for the regional organization. Clark is filling the position vacated by Ty Warner last year. Gary Stith has been the interim executive director since December of last year. Colonel Clark has been garrison commander of Fort Riley for two years, and was also stationed at Fort Riley in the early 1990’s.
