LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP)   Kansas basketball coach Bill Self was publicly reprimanded by the NCAA and fined an undisclosed amount on Wednesday after damaging the scorer’s table during an NCAA tournament game in Kansas City. Self struck the table at the Sprint Center on March 24 during a third-round win over North Carolina. Ron Wellman, the chair of the Division I men’s basketball committee, said in a statement that “Coach Self’s actions were out of line with the committee’s expectations that championship participants act in a manner that represents the highest standards of sportsmanship.” The damage fell under NCAA guidelines…

A Country Stampede fan on his way to the annual festival didn’t quite make it Wednesday afternoon. Wamego Assistant Police Chief Paul Schliffke tells KMAN emergency crews responded to the fire at Fourth and Lincoln at about four p.m. The 1989 parked Pace Arrow motor home was a complete loss, with significant damage to the near-by building, identified as the Last Stop convenience store. The owner of the motor home is identified as Walter Hale of Topeka, but the driver who parked the vehicle was William Huckaby of Lancaster. The Manhattan Fire Department’s Wednesday report stated a semi-truck and a trailer caught on fire Tuesday night. The fire began at 5th Street and El Paso Lane around 6 p.m., upon arrival firefighters found the cab and refrigeration unit of the trailer were fully involved and extinguished the fire. It was determined after an investigation that the fire began in the refrigeration unit because of equipment failure. Fire loss is estimated at $151,000 and a $1,000 damage to a semi parked 8 feet from the one that was involved.

In a one-run game in the bottom of the 9th, the Royals put runners on the corners with nobody out against Braves closer Craig Kimbrel, but Atlanta hung on for a 4-3 win at Kauffman Stadium when Alcides Escobar flied out with the bases loaded. Kimbrel walked Mike Moustakas and gave up a single to David Lough to start the ninth, but rallied to strike out Elliot Johnson and Jarrod Dyson. (AP)   The Kansas City Royals recalled left-hander Will Smith and optioned struggling right-hander Kelvin Herrera to Triple-A Omaha in a series of moves before Tuesday night’s game against Atlanta. Left-hander Danny Duffy, who has been recovering from Tommy John surgery, was reinstated from the 60-day disabled list and optioned to Omaha. Left-hander Francisley Bueno was designated for assignment to clear roster space. AUSTIN, Texas (AP) Texas Republicans have passed new abortion restrictions expected to close almost every abortion clinic in the nation’s second most populous state. The Republican-controlled House voted for the bill while hundreds of protesters screamed from the gallery. The bill passed after the midnight deadline and because of that rule, the bill was killed sending Texas Governor Rick Perry and his supporters back to the drawing board. Texas’ special legislative session ended at midnight, and Democrats spent most of the day filibustering the bill. Republicans cited rules to eventually force a vote to end the filibuster. The Manhattan Chamber of Commerce gave a glowing report of its progress so far during a briefing for the 2014 budget at the Manhattan commission meeting on Tuesday night at city hall. However, an issue with a recent grant for a study concerning the viability of  a new field house drew the attention of commissioner Wynn Butler. Butler says he’s not upset the Chamber gave the $25,000 for the study (although he doesn’t agree with it), but wants to ensure any such future expenditures are brought under the umbrella of the city commission first.
