TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Kansas officials are preparing to auction off a 100-year-old Topeka home built by a prominent attorney and banker. The Department of Administration scheduled Tuesday’s auction after rejecting two bids for the Hiram Price Dillon home in February. The higher two bids was $351,000, from a law firm. The 12,000-square-foot home near the Statehouse was built in 1913 by Dillon. It’s on the National Register of Historic Places and is known for its Italian Renaissance-style architecture. Fort Riley is one of 10 U-S Army posts slated for a draw down–that was the word from the Chief of Staff of the Army, who held a news conference at the Pentagon Tuesday afternoon. Governor’s Military Council Executive Director John Armbrust of Manhattan tells KMAN while the news isn’t good, it shouldn’t mean a total loss for Fort Riley. The Army is cutting a brigade at Fort Riley by September 2017. The 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, is set to conduct a change of command ceremony Friday morning at 10 at the Cavalry Parade Field on Fort Riley. The “Devil” Brigade will bid farewell to its current commander, Col. Michael Pappal, who led the unit during its 2010-2011 deployment to Baghdad in support of Operation New Dawn. While in Iraq, the brigade performed a mission with the Iraqi Security Forces, and was among the last American units in the Iraqi capital. The brigade will welcome Col. A lightning strike early Tuesday morning caused minimal damage to a two story house on Zeandale road. Riley County Fire Chief Pat Collins tells KMAN lightning apparently struck a gutter, blowing out a downpipe on the side of the house. While there was no actual fire, damage is estimated at 800 to one-thousand dollars. Power was knocked out to the home. Collins says the call came in at about 5:30 a.m. The house was located in the 35-hundred block of Zeandale Road.

ESPN’s Jeff Goodman reports that K-State basketball transfer Adrian Diaz will continue his college career at Florida International.  Diaz will sit out the 2013-14 season due to NCAA transfer rules before being eligible to play for the Panthers. FIU is coming off an 18-14 season, and will be led by Anthony Evans after Richard Pitino departed for Minnesota. Diaz announced he was leaving K-State in April after two seasons with the Wildcats.
