Update at 5:57 p.m. According to Greg Harkrader with the Kansas Highway Patrol, Southbound lanes of Tuttle Creek Boulevard are now open while Northbound lanes were being diverted through the state park by the corps office. The Kansas Highway Patrol and Kansas Department of Transportation were both working to get northbound lanes reopened very soon. A Fatal accident in the 4600 block of Tuttle Creek Boulevard between a passenger vehicle and semi-trailer blocked traffic earlier this afternoon to and from Manhattan. The trial began Tuesday in the case of the City of Manhattan vs. Jeff Gauthier, regarding a proposed amount of funding to be set aside in the city’s budget each year for social services. Six witnesses were called to the stand by the plaintiff’s attorney-Ron Schneider. The first two witnesses, Jeff Gauthier and Nancy Golden, are members of the “Save Our Social Services”(SOS) organization. They answered questions regarding the petition they helped circulate in the hopes to enact an ordinance requiring two percent of the city’s general fund budget to be used toward social services. The Board of Directors of Manhattan Area Technical College (MATC) has joined the ranks of other institutions around the State by adopting a resolution to extend the prohibition against weapons on campus for a period up to four years, as allowed by Kansas statute outlined in the Senate Substitute for HB 2052 approved during the 2013 session. The Riley County Attorney’s Office has filed a Notice Of Appeal of the Miles Theurer sentence imposed Monday. A news release issued by County Attorney Barry Wilkerson just before noon Tuesday indicates the defendant’s conviction carried a presumption of incarceration in a state prison of 38-43 months. A departure from the sentencing guidelines is a subject to appeal, and the Riley County Attorney’s Office will file an appeal and ask the appellate court to overturn the departure sentence to probation, which Miles Theurer received. Eastbound and westbound U.S. 24 is closed .5 miles west of Rossville due to an overturned semi that spilled loose corn onto the highway. Delays are expected as crews must upright the semi and remove the corn. Traffic is being detoured down 54th Street to Maple Hill Road and drivers are advised to avoid the area and take alternate routes if possible. The semi driver was not injured in the accident. On the same day a 60 day sentence was handed down in a DUI case that resulted in two deaths, another man was sentenced to about three years with the Kansas Department of corrections for a DUI that resulted in three people being injured. Kansas State student Corey Monley was 18 when he was driving a vehicle that side swiped another vehicle and entered oncoming traffic, striking a third vehicle head on. Few K-State fans don’t know the track and field resume of K-State legend Steve Fritz as a decathlete. He was a multi-time Big 12 champion, national champion, and a fourth place finisher in the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. Fritz has also been the throws coach at K-State under Cliff Rovelto for the last 21 years. Kansas State University’s president and first lady are recipients of Fort Riley’s highest honor for private citizens. Kirk Schulz, university president, and Noel Schulz, associate dean for research and graduate programs in the College of Engineering and Paslay professor of electrical and computer engineering, both received the Fort Riley Distinguished Trooper Award on June 12. Created in 2001, the award recognizes the sustained public service and contributions of private citizens to the Fort Riley community.
