The Kansas City Symphony played in front of a sold-out crowd Saturday evening at Fort Riley’s Historic Main Post. Over 5,000 Spectators from all over the area came to witness the 8th annual Symphony in the Flint Hills. The day also featured heritage and culture presentations which displayed the natural history of the tallgrass prairie and the history of Fort Riley. Visitors took trips to the First Territorial Capitol, river walks, tours of Custer’s House, and more. After sunset and the orchestra played its last number, spectators danced the night away and gazed at the stars in Cavalry Parade Field.…

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback is still considering action on the state’s budget, with a spokeswoman saying a decision is expected over the weekend. Legislators finished work on the budget on June 2, laying out how to spend $14.5 billion in each of the next two fiscal years. The Republican governor has until Sunday by law to sign the bill, veto all or parts of the measure or let it become law without his signature. The Riley County Relay for Life kicked off on Friday at Cico park. Participants gathered for what organizers say was a large turn out to date for the county. Event organizer, and survivor herself, Melissa Mills-Turnbull explains that the event is important for those involved with the struggle to combat the disease, and it helps on many levels to help fund the American Cancer Society. Susan Schindler says participants do a variety of things to support the Relay for Life, and one rivalry for top honors at the event had come to a head as the Riley County Police Department…

The Kansas Department of Agriculture and Kansas State University broke ground on a new facility Friday afternoon at Research Park. The K-State Foundation is constructing a three-story, 50,000-square-foot facility and leasing it to the Kansas Department of Agriculture for a 20-year period. The new facility will be next to the K-State Institute of Commercialization and the National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility.
