Students from the K-State College of Veterinary Medicine visited Sunset Zoo Wednesday to complete annual physicals on on a Colobus monkey troop. The visit is part of a program that allows fourth-year veterinary students to gain hands-on training to care for a variety of zoo animals. Dr. James W. Carpenter, Professor of Zoological Medicine, Dr. David Eshar, Assistant Professor of Zoological Medicine and their interns led the students during physicals. The students observed the animals weight, overall appearance, administering vaccinations and obtaining blood samples. Residents of the Fort Riley area will not be able to access their internet tonight if CenturyLink is their provider. CenturyLink Manager of Market Development Pamela Anderson told KMAN that the upgrade is needed to install equipment that will benefit customers long-term. CenturyLink apologizes for any inconvenience the upgrade will cause for customers between the times of 12:01 a.m. and 4 a.m. The planned outage will not affect any wireless service if customers need to call 911.

An estimated 180 jobs are headed to Manhattan with the Kansas Department of Agriculture’s relocation. The groundbreaking ceremony will be held Friday and the building is projected to be complete by July 1st of 2014. During Thursday’s Riley County Commission meeting, Manhattan Area Chamber of Commerce President, Lyle Butler shared information about recent tours. Members of the Chamber, and local volunteers, have taken individuals on tours earlier this week who will possibly be moving to the area when the department is up and running. Schools, churches, retirement locations, etc are explored on the tours to provide information about the town.…

On Wednesday the Riley County Police Department Civil Process Division arrested a Clay Center man for failing to appear in court. 22-year-old Skylar Scheible was originally charged with felony possession or control of Methamphetamines. Scheible has since been released on a $10,000 bond. ———–

After earning Big 12 Player of the Year honors, K-State junior second baseman Ross Kivett just picked up his second all-America distinction.  Baseball America named Kivett a third team all-American after Collegiate Baseball also did so at the conclusion of the regular season.  Kivett helped lead the Cats to their first Big 12 title and within an eyelash of the College World Series.  He hit .360 with 15 doubles, four triples, three home runs and 39 RBI.  Kivett was selected in the 10th round of last week’s Major League Baseball draft by his hometown Cleveland Indians.  He is a native of Broadview Heights, OH.

(AP) Lorenzo Cain hit a tying, two-run homer off Jose Valverde with two outs in the ninth inning and Eric Hosmer had a winning single in the 10th, helping the Kansas City Royals overcome Justin Verlander’s seven scoreless innings Wednesday in a 3-2 victory over the Detroit Tigers. A pair of Manhattan High seniors were tabbed all-state by the Kansas Softball Coaches’ Association. Infielder Jenna Stigge and outfielder Kylie Smith both received second team 6A all-state recognition. Rock Creek reached the 4A state tournament, their third appearance at state in the last five years. Three Mustangs were named second team-all state, catcher Kelsey Quinn, infielder Megan Srna, and outfielder Winter Henry. Riley County pitcher Heidi Prockish was also named second team 3A all-state by the KSCA.
