The 1st Infantry Division Band Brass Quintet is offering a free concert this Saturday, May 25 at 1:00 p.m., at the Manhattan Public Library. Performing selections from John Williams, Aaron Copeland, and Irving Berlin, the group puts a special “blues and brass” twist on patriotic music in honor of Memorial Day. A member of the 2013 K-State men’s basketball recruiting class has been named as one of only 40 players in the country to the 57th annual Parade All-America team.  Marcus Foster, a 6 foot 2 inch shooting guard out of Wichita Falls, Texas, inked his national letter of intent to play for the Cats in November.  He averaged 27 points and 11 rebounds per game as a senior this past season. “We’ve accomplished so much” is the way Manhattan High graduating senior Eli Redeker started his portion of the commencement speech during Sunday’s ceremony for more than 400 graduates. For the first time in school history, K-State will be the #1 seed in the Big 12 baseball tournament after winning the regular season title.  The Cats will open play on Wednesday afternoon against #8 seed Texas Tech.  K-State swept the Red Raiders in Manhattan on Easter weekend in April to start a run of 13 league wins in 17 tries.  The Cats clinched the Big 12 crown with a series win against Oklahoma over the weekend, and could see the Sooners early in Oklahoma City.  OU is in K-State’s double-elimination pool as the #4 seed and will face 5th…

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP)   Yoenis Cespedes hit a leadoff home run in the eighth inning and the Oakland Athletics beat the Kansas City Royals 4-3 on Sunday to complete a three-game sweep. Cespedes hit his eighth homer, connecting against Kelvin Herrera (2-4), who no longer will work the eighth inning for the Royals according to manager Ned Yost. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Johnny Gray raced to his third victory of the season Sunday at the NHRA Kansas Nationals to regain the Funny Car points lead. Gray beat Robert Hight in the final round at Heartland Park Topeka for his sixth career victory, finishing in 4.067 seconds at 314.90 mph in a Dodge Avenger. Hight lost traction in his Ford Mustang. Shawn Langdon won the Top Fuel division, and Jeg Coughlin topped the Pro Stock field. KINGMAN, Kan. (AP) Jury selection begins Monday in the trial of a former Kansas police instructor charged with killing his wife. The Wichita Eagle reports that Brett Seacat is charged with first-degree murder in the April 2011 death of Vashti Seacat, 34. Investigators found her body after a fire damaged the Kingman home where the couple lived with their two sons, ages 2 and 4. Brett Seacat escaped the home with the boys. He’s a former instructor at the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center in Reno County. Vashti Seacat filed for divorce 16 days before she died. Brett Seacat claimed…
