Board of Education National Historic site in Topeka will display a black doll used in a series of famous race studies to mark the anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court ruling. The case that toppled segregated education was decided 59 years ago Friday. In the 1940s and 1950s, psychologists Kenneth and Mamie Clark presented children with a black doll and a white doll as part of social science experiments. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Kansas House and Senate negotiators are preparing to go back to work on a new state budget with hopes of bringing the legislative session to a close. Negotiators met briefly on Wednesday and scheduled more talks for Thursday afternoon. Differences remain over funding for higher education and how to spend the savings from the state’s adoption of a new Medicaid system. This was also brought up during Thursday’s Joint Manhattan City/Pottawatomie County/Riley County commission meeting, held at City Hall. The Manhattan Urban Area Comprehensive Plan was the first item up for discussion. The Pottawatomie County Sheriff Office continues to investigate a series of what appears to be related thefts from construction sites, construction vehicles and a lumber yard located between Manhattan and Wamego, Pottawatomie County. These thefts are believed to have started around April 20th at a construction site North of Highway 24 on Green Valley Road. Update: TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Topeka police say a 12-year-old boy from Fort Riley has died after he was pulled from a Topeka hotel’s pool. The boy, Dalton Register, went under the water while swimming at the pool at Ramada West last Friday. Topeka police said resuscitation measures were tried immediately after he was taken from the pool. Dalton was hospitalized and police said Thursday he had died, but they did not say when. The Flint Hills Metropolitan Planning organization has a new Transportation Planner. Stephanie Watts, who has been serving with the Kansas Department of Transportation in a similar role, has been hired to work with the local group. The announcement was made at the group’s Wednesday meeting. Watts says the Flint HIlls Metropolitan Planning organization’s policy board dealt with just a few items earlier this week, taking action on the technical advisory board’s by-laws. We’d recently heard about the closing of the Saline County Juvenile Detention Facility, and that will have a positive impact on Riley County in terms of expenses for the North Central Kansas Regional Juvenile Detention Center, located in Junction City. That’s according to Riley County Commission Chair Dave Lewis, who also serves as the Vice-Chair of the detention facility board. Update-Second Half of Meeting Riley County GIS Intern, Ethan Britt will be graduating this weekend from Kansas State University. Before he leaves, he presented a very special project, he has been working on, to the county commission. Britt created a new Historic Sites of Riley County map, which features 80 different locations. Each site is numbered on the light brown map. Each number then coincides to brief paragraphs describing the history of the site.
