TOPEKA, KAN. – A Salina man has been sentenced to 78 months in federal prison on drug trafficking and firearms charges, U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom said today. Chris Alan Martin, 46, Salina, Kan., pleaded guilty to one count of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, one count of possession of a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking and one count of unlawful possession of a firearm after a felony conviction. After investigators arranged to buy methamphetamine from Martin, the I-70 Drug Task Force obtained a search warrant for his residence in Salina. Rules and regulations regarding sanitary codes are very specific, but they can be changed if the commission so chooses. During Monday’s Riley County Commission meeting, the commission received a sanitary code appeal for a lagoon permit. Joe and Nancy Moore own a 2.7 acre piece of land in the county. Their house burned down last year and they wish to rebuild. In order to do so, the couple needs a lagoon on the property. The requirement for the sanitary code is that the piece of land must be at least three acres in order to be eligible for a lagoon.…
ATCHISON, Kan. (AP) The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers plans to create more shallow-water habitat along the Missouri River. The St. Joseph News-Press reports that the corps has announced plans to build the habitat in an area known as Benedictine Bottoms, just northeast of Atchison. The goal of the projects is to provide a refuge for young pallid sturgeon and other native species. There used to be much more shallow-water habitat along the river. LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) The Dole Institute of Politics is planning to celebrate former U.S. Sen. Bob Dole’s 90th birthday as part of its lineup of summer events. The Lawrence Journal World reports that other activities include an in-depth look at the Battle of Gettysburg. Director Bill Lacy says that on June 20, the center will bring in a panel of historians and military experts to mark the 150th anniversary of the three-day battle. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Advocates for the more than 5,600 Kansas children in the state’s foster care system have scheduled an event to highlight the needs of foster children. Gov. Sam Brownback was scheduled to open Monday’s event at the Statehouse by signing a proclamation declaring May as Foster Care Month. The signing was to be followed by a gathering on the south steps coordinated by the Kansas Department for Children and Family Services. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Kansas legislators are returning to the Statehouse to continue their annual session certain they’ll miss their goal of finishing business in 80 days. Monday was the 80th day of the session, and Republican leaders of the GOP-dominated Legislature didn’t expect an agreement on tax cuts and a state budget until later in the week. The Republican leaders have said throughout the year they expected to trim 10 days from what’s normally scheduled as a 90-day session. During Monday’s Pottawatomie County Commission meeting, representatives from the Westmoreland City Council stopped in to talk about a few concerns. Jim Moore, a council member in Westmoreland, brought forth pictures and a presentation on some of the damage that is being caused by the Justice Center project and the new EMS building. Along the Justice Center, there has been a decrease in area for ditch drainage as dirt and supplies are constantly being moved around, which has raised some concerns to how water flow will be once the project is completed. Governor Sam Brownback has ordered flags to be flown at half-staff from sun-up to sun-down in honor of National Peace Officers Memorial Day. National Peace Officers Memorial Day was established in 1961 to recognize local, state and federal law enforcement and peace officials.
The Riley County Police Department will host the 2013 Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony to honor those local law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty. This ceremony will also recognize all employees of the Riley County Police Department and their service to the public.
