TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) A northeast Kansas doctor accused of illegally distributing prescription drugs will remain in federal custody for now. Fifty-three-year-old Michael Schuster was indicted May 1 on multiple counts alleging he operated a pill mill from his clinic in Manhattan. U.S. Magistrate Judge Gary Sebelius on Thursday denied Schuster’s request to set bail, calling him a flight risk. Sebelius said Schuster and his wife had misled authorities about their assets and the whereabouts of their passports after the charges were filed. A man from Manhattan has pleaded guilty to taking part in an armed robbery that set in motion a series of events leading ultimately to a deadly arson in which a Kansas State University researcher died, U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom said Thursday.   Dennis James Denzien, 20, Manhattan,  pleaded guilty to one count of aiding and abetting a robbery. In his plea, Denzien admitted that on Feb. 6, 2013, he drove co-defendant Frank Joseph Hanson to Dara’s Fast Lane at 1816 Claflin Road in Manhattan. Updated at 1:30 p.m. Thursday The number of arrests in a multi-law enforcement drug-related operation is up to 81 now, with additional arrests expected. That was the word early Thursday afternoon, with 54 search warrants throughout Manhattan, Ogden, Junction City, and Grandview Plaza. During the searches a variety of narcotics and 17 firearms were seized. The case has also displaced a number of children, all which have been placed in protective custody. At least two dozen arrests involving drug-related offenses are on Thursday’s Riley County police log–with bond amounts ranging up to $200,000. Those arrested are from Manhattan and Junction City. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) A Kansas Senate committee has approved a bill authorizing an additional $202 million in bonds for a national biodefense lab after adding limits designed to address some conservative Republicans’ concerns. The Ways and Means Committee’s voice vote Wednesday sends the measure to the full Senate for debate, possibly as early as Friday. Kansas has authorized $105 million in bonds for the National Bio- and Agro-Defense Facility at Kansas State University. Republican Gov. HUTCHINSON, Kan. (AP) It appears Hutchinson’s July 4 festivities won’t include a fireworks display this year but the annual Patriots Parade is still on. The board that organized the fireworks show and HutchFest celebration disbanded last year and new members have not come forward to help. The board’s last member, Ron Williams, says plans for this year’s celebration are off. Sponsors of the Patriots Parade say that event will continue. And a talent show also will be part of the Independence Day celebration. The Hutchinson News reports that the city has spent $10,000 a year to fund the fireworks show.…
