After being held scoreless for the first three innings, the Kansas State Wildcats got their bats going in the middle innings and put away the Texas Longhorns in a 9-3 romp on Sunday before 5,710 at Disch-Falk Field. Austin Fisher led the offensive attack for K-State with three hits while Jared King and Blair DeBord added two apiece to get the Bat Cats a rare series victory in Austin. High Jumper Erik Kynard added to his long list of accomplishments on Saturday at the Big 12 Track and Field Championships in Waco, Texas by becoming the first high jumper to win three Big 12 titles. Kynard who repeated as conference champ in his event and who is the two-time defending National Champion, won the title with a jump of 2.30 meters or seven feet, six and a half inches. Less than two weeks after the team suffered a major blow when Sophomore Point Guard Angel Rodriguez announced he was leaving the Kansas State Men’s Basketball program, it appears Bruce Weber’s squad will be getting some help in filling the vacancy he left behind. PARK CITY, Kan. (AP) A Colorado man has died after accidentally being shot with a .22 magnum by a friend who lives in the Wichita suburb of Park City. The Wichita Eagle reports Eloy Portillo-Meza was pronounced dead around 12:30 a.m. Saturday at Wesley Medical Center. He was rushed there in critical condition after the shooting at 9 p.m. Friday. Police say a friend who lives in the home thought he had unloaded the gun and was putting it back together when it discharged and hit the 36-year-old Denver resident in the abdomen. PAOLA, Kan. (AP) Miami County authorities have charged two teenagers in connection with an ATV crash that killed a 17-year-old student. Miami County Attorney Elizabeth Sweeney-Reeder said Friday that William Mahaffy Sutherland, 18, of Overland Park has been charged with aggravated endangering a child and unlawfully hosting minors consuming alcohol. Sweeney-Reeder says another person who was 17 at the time of the crash is charged in juvenile court with involuntary manslaughter-DUI. They’re charged in connection with the November 2012 death of Tyler Rathbun. Rathbun was a senior at Shawnee Mission East High School when he died in an ATV crash…

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach is close to winning legislative approval for new power for his office to investigate and prosecute election fraud cases. Kobach said Friday he’s optimistic lawmakers will approve the bill when they reconvene next week to wrap up their business for the year. The House and Senate have approved different versions of Kobach’s bill, setting up negotiations over the final version. Lead House negotiator Lance Kinzer said Kobach’s proposal is on track to pass.
