The Kansas City Chiefs have parted ways with CB Javier Arenas and in exchange receive FB Anthony Sherman from the Arizona Cardinals. The Alabama product played in a total of 47 games for Kansas City since being drafted by the Chiefs in 2010. Arenas recorded eight passes defended in 2012, a number that ranked third on the team. Besides playing corner, the 25-year-old can also return punts. Arenas averaged 12.8 yards per punt return in 2011, a number that led the AFC and ranked third in the NFL. A Southern California wildfire fueled by strong winds was raging through 41/4 square miles of Riverside County on Wednesday in the biggest of a series of statewide fires that broke out amid dry, gusty conditions.

SALINA, Kan. (AP) Saline County commissioners say the county’s juvenile detention center will be closed through the end of the year, and might close permanently. Saline County Sheriff Glen Kochanowski shut down the center on Monday, but said he hoped to reopen it by July. But on Tuesday, the commissioners said closing the center will save the county money, although they were still studying how much the savings would be. LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) A small airplane has crashed in northeast Kansas, and its pilot was taken by helicopter to an area hospital with serious injuries. Kansas Highway Patrol spokesman Casey Simoneau says the pilot took off from a private residence in an ultralight aircraft around 12:40 p.m. Wednesday, lost control of the plane and crashed into a tree. The plane went down in Douglas County, southeast of Lawrence. The pilot’s name wasn’t immediately available. He was taken to Kansas University Medical Center, where Simoneau says he was in serious condition.
SALINA, Kan. (AP) Salina police are investigating the apparent disappearance of a 27-year-old woman who’s been missing nearly a week. Kristin Tyler’s car was found Tuesday in Salina. Lt. Scott Siemsen of the Salina Police Department says the car appeared to be in normal condition and was towed to the police department. Tyler was last seen April 25. Police say they consider her disappearance suspicious because it’s unlike Tyler to leave without contacting family for long periods of time. Police also say they’re following a number of leads in Tyler’s disappearance.
Prices will remain for both meal prices for the 2013-2014 school year and for the parking permits. Both issues were brought forward during Wednesday’s Manhattan Ogden school board meeting. Meal prices were originally slated for their last meeting, but more time was needed to determine if regulations from the USDA were correct that would keep costs from rising this next school year. Manhattan-Ogden USD 383 announced Wednesday that a handgun was found near the Manhattan High School West Campus on Tuesday evening.
