President Barack Obama will present the nation’s highest military honor for valor this week to the family of the Rev. Emil Kapaun, who was credited with saving hundreds of lives while serving a chaplain in the Korean War. DODGE CITY, Kan. (AP) Dodge City officials are not quite sure just where to put two massive sculptures donated by the Dennis Hopper Art Trust to the city where its namesake was born and raised. The pieces are known as La Salsa Man and Mobil Man. They are 26 and 21 feet tall respectively. The trust administrator calls them a “large, impactful and a defiant blend of Californian and Southwestern culture mixed with Hollywood grandeur.” County Commissioners unanimously voted to put the statues at the special events center. PITTSBURG, Kan. (AP) A three-day summit meeting on homelessness and housing in Kansas takes place next week in Pittsburg. The annual gathering is designed to help community members, law enforcement, educators and others better serve the homeless population. This is the 14th year for the summit, which will take place April 15-17 at Pittsburg Memorial Auditorium. The hosts are the Kansas Statewide Homeless Coalition and the nonprofit SEK-CAP Inc., the Southeast Kansas Community Action Program. After Tuesday’s General election, the Pottawatomie County Commissioners took some time to canvass the votes to make sure everything was as it should be, showing only one tie. With the flip of a coin, the mayor of Emmett was decided upon, choosing Robert Blair. An accident has occurred at the intersection of Walters and Tuttle Creek Boulevard. Three people were injured in the accident and were transported to Mercy Regional Health Center. The injuries included a neck injury, a head injury, and an abdominal injury. No further information has been given, but KMAN will keep you posted as soon as more information becomes available.
The Riley County commissioners wear numerous hats, as many serve on other boards and committees. The commission also serves as the “Board of County Canvassers”, which requires them to review the results, and approve them before the results are officially complete. The city/school board election results were reviewed during Monday’s county commission meeting, during the canvass. County Clerk, Rich Vargo reported 68 provisional ballots were submitted during the election. These ballots were reviewed by the election staff, and then run through the ballot machine. A Lawrence man is served a new warrant while in custody in Riley County for unrelated charges. Riley County Police told reporters on Monday that Walter Warren (38) was arrested at the Riley County Law Enforcement Center. The new warrant stems from charges of not having proof of liability insurance. Bond was set at $5,000 and Warren remains confined. ### Various drug charges land a Council Grove man behind bars. Riley County Police have released the names of the victims and suspect in the shooting that occurred early Sunday morning at 900 Garden Way in Manhattan. 22 year-old US Army Soldier, Michael T. Lowery, of the 4th Brigade 4-1 DSDB Alpha Company, Ft. Riley, KS, was found deceased at the scene. Injured victims include: 23 year-old Christine Kim of Junction City, was life flighted to St. Francis Hospital in Wichita, KS for medical treatment.
