PITTSBURG, Kan. (AP) A southeast Kansas man has been sentenced to more than seven years in prison for his role in the death of a Pittsburg man three years ago. Forty-one-year-old Charles F. Mitchell of Pittsburg was sentenced Tuesday for in the death of Ian P. Monaghan,29. Mitchell and Amie Lee Ryburn, 33, were originally charged with first-degree murder after Monaghan was found shot to death in July 2010 in a field two miles west of Pittsburg. The Joplin Globe reports Ryburn, who was the person who shot Monaghan, pleaded guilty earlier this year to second-degree murder and manufacturing methamphetamine.…

President Barack Obama says the international community’s credibility is on the line if a chemical attack on civilians in Syria goes unanswered. He says the red line was set when the treaty condemning the use of chemical weapons was ratified.
Wamego officials will review the school crossing guard issue. At Tuesday’s City Commission meeting, City Manager Merl Page introduced concerned citizen Margaret Feyh, who stated she can’t get anyone to taken on the crossing guard responsibility. Her issue is Wamego’s main street, Lincoln Avenue, is also Highway 99, and there is an elementary school and high school between 7th and 8th street off of Lincoln Avenue. Feyh told commissioners even though there are marked school crossings and speed limits, it’s still a dangerous situation. More than 200 people showed up for Riley County’s USD 378 school board meeting Tuesday night. Many of those were there to show support for formerly suspended high school business teacher Mark Laurie. District Superintendent Brad Starnes wasn’t sure if the close to 240 registered for the meeting constituted a record for a board meeting… Starnes tells KMAN he can’t say much when it comes to a personnel issue, but he confirms Laurie had been suspended a few weeks ago according to district policy. Ariel Castro, the man who held three women captive for more than a decade, has been found hanged in his prison cell. The 53 year old was sentenced to life imprisonment without parole plus 1,000 years at the beginning of August. The former school bus driver abducted Gina DeJesus, Amanda Berry and Michelle Knight between 2002-04 when they were 14,16 and 21 years old. He kept the women captive at his home in Cleveland in Ohio in the US until May this year when Amanda Berry managed to escape and contact police. Castro kept his victims chained up and raped…
