GARDEN CITY, Kan. (AP) Garden City police say a 77-year-old man died after he was hit by a car while walking across a city street. The fatality was identified as Tiofilo Gallardo. Police say he was crossing a street Tuesday when he was hit by a pickup truck driven by 52-year-old Gary Orosco of Garden City. Garden City police Capt. Michael Reagle said Gallardo was not walking in the crosswalk when he was struck. The Garden City Telegram reports the investigation is continuing.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) Despite objections from landowners and the city of Eudora, Douglas County commissioners have approved a sand pit mining operation. The commission voted Wednesday to allow Penny’s Concrete Inc. to move one of its current dredging operations onto the south bank of the Kansas River on land northwest of Eudora. State and federal authorities still need to approve the operation. Earlier this week, the Eudora City Commission urged the county commission to reject the permit. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) A nonprofit Texas group is asking Wichita officials to adopt a program that would let citizens issue citations when they see drivers illegally using disabled parking spots. KWCH-TV reports Austin, Texas-based Parking Mobility would get a cut of each paid parking ticket if Wichita adopts the program. The program allows people to download an app to their smartphones and take pictures of violating vehicles before submitting them to the organization. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) Hispanic business groups are joining forces to reach out to the business community about economic development in Kansas. The organizations announced plans Wednesday for a Hispanic business forum on Oct. 23 at the National Center for Aviation Training in Wichita. The event is hosted by the Kansas Hispanic and Latin American Affairs Commission along with the Wichita Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Greater Kansas City. Participants will discuss economic development with the Hispanic business community.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Several Shawnee County organizations are sponsoring a community workout on the campus of Washburn University in Topeka. The fourth annual event will be held Sept. 17, beginning with a health fair shortly after sunrise. The workout starts at 6:30 a.m. at Washburn’s Moore Bowl and events are expected to be completed shortly thereafter. Organizers are encouraging people to participate regardless of their fitness level or ages. As many as 850 residents have taken part in previous years. The event is sponsored by several Topeka area health organizations, the Shawnee County Health Agency and the YMCA of Topeka.

MERRIAM, Kan. (AP) The Merriam City Council has approved a deal that will bring Google Fiber to the Kansas City suburb. The Kansas City Star reports the city council approved the deal Monday. Merriam becomes the 17th city in the Kansas City market to come to terms with Google for the construction of a fiber-based network. The network promises upload and download speeds of up to 1 gigabit per second about 100 times as fast as most Americans can buy for their homes. Raising Riley RIGHT is an early childhood program funded by the Children’s Cabinets Initiative and Trust, from the state.  The program covers several different topics, including childhood behavior. There is currently a vacant facilitator position within the program, which Riley County Health Department Director, Brenda Nickel requested be filled, during Thursday’s county commission meeting. The previous facilitator vacated the position to go to the infant/toddler program.  Nickel mentioned there is currently a staff member that has expressed interest in the position and has training in behavioral health.
