A Manhattan man was arrested Monday on allegations of rape and furnishing alcohol to a minor. The Riley County Police Department said Tuesday that 29-year-old Dameon Skidmore was being held at the Riley County Jail in lieu of bond, pending a first court appearance. The victim in the case is a 15-year-old girl known to him. Due to the nature of the crime, no further information is being released.
Dameon Skidmore, 29, of Manhattan was arrested on May 15, 2023, around 7:45 p.m. for rape and furnishing alcohol to a minor. This arrest stems from an incident involving a 15-year-old girl known to Skidmore. He is being held in the Riley County Jail in lieu of bond pending a first appearance in Riley County District Court. The Riley County Law Board approved the Riley County Police Department’s 2024 Proposed Budget 3 for publication Monday, which included the Board’s previous request to lower cost of living adjustments (COLA) to 6.5% After considering Proposed Budget 2 last month, the board voiced concerns about its 8% COLA and requested RCPD return with a third budget that included a COLA sitting closer to 6%. During Monday’s presentation, RCPD Administration Captain Brad Jager asked the Board to continue considering an 8% COLA so the department can stay consistent with the Midwest Consumer Price Index annualized amount and catch up with inflation.…
A Manhattan man was taken into custody Saturday evening after he reportedly stole another man’s gun. RCPD says 30-year-old Michael Brooks was arrested in the 1900 block of Crescent Drive, resisting initially when officers were taking him into custody. The gun owner and victim in the case was a 19-year-old man. Brooks is charged with criminal possession of a firearm, theft and interference with a law enforcement officer. Brooks is free after posting an $8,000 bond.

Phase 3 of the runway reconstruction project at Manhattan Regional Airport kicked off Friday, exactly one week after the suspension of all American Airlines services. Airport Director Brandon Keazer says Phase 3 includes construction that is now halting both commercial and general aviation services. Phase 3 is scheduled to wrap up July 19th, allowing general aviation services to resume. Keazer says they anticipate finishing Phase 4 on September 1st, but the exact date of commercial flight resumption is still uncertain. The Riley County Law Board will consider the 2024 Riley County Police Department budget for publication when it meets today. Agenda materials show two proposed budgets to be considered — including a $27.2 million budget, with base changes, an 8 percent COLA and the remaining 50 percent of a salary survey implemented last year as a two-year phased increase. The other proposal is a $26.9 million budget that reduces the COLA to 6.5 percent, though board members could opt to push the cost of living adjustment to a lower figure.
