On a cloudy day with snow showers falling steadily, K-State overcame an early 2-0 deficit with a four-run third inning en route to a 6-3 snow-shortened seven inning victory over Bethune-Cookman on Saturday afternoon at Tointon Family Stadium.  Matt Wivinis (4-0) settled down after surrendering two runs on three hits in the first inning, and allowed just another run on three hits, with five strikeouts to earn the complete game win. SHAWNEE, Kan. (AP) Authorities are investigating a deadly accident at a FedEx facility in suburban Kansas City. Shawnee police said officers were called around 3:40 p.m. Saturday to the facility. Witnesses said the victim fell under the wheels of a tandem tractor-trailer rig that was attempting to leave the facility. Police said it wasn’t clear what caused the victim to fall. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The name of the victim wasn’t immediately released, pending notification of relatives.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) A suspect in a deadly overnight shooting west of downtown Topeka has surrendered to police. The Topeka Capital-Journal reports that the suspect was booked into the Shawnee County Jail after turning himself in around 9 a.m. Saturday. The suspect is being held on suspicion of first-degree murder in the death of Faustino N. Martinez II, 22, of Wichita. Police Lt. John Sturgeon said officers were called around 2:30 a.m. Saturday to an apartment building, where there had been reports of yelling and possible gunshots. Sturgeon says the responding officers found a man suffering from life-threatening gunshot wounds.…

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) A lawsuit has been filed over a deadly natural gas explosion that destroyed a Kansas City restaurant. The Kansas City Star reports that the suit was filed Friday in Jackson County Circuit Court on behalf of six employees of JJ’s restaurant. They were among more a dozen people injured in the Feb. 19 explosion that also killed a restaurant server. Defendants include Missouri Gas Energy, a utility locating service, Time Warner Cable and its subcontractor, Olathe-based Heartland Midwest. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Legislators are continuing efforts to develop a pilot program aimed at freeing school districts from rules and regulations that many claim impair creative teaching. Republican legislators and school administrators say the program would foster creative ways to get more out of student achievement. The Kansas National Education Association and other detractors worry about the rights of teachers and whether such a proposal is even constitutional. The plan would set up a five-year pilot program allowing up to 28 districts to form a coalition of innovative districts. They would apply to be part of the program, spelling out…

Friday morning, KMAN told you about a multi-vehicle accident that occurred around 7 am, since then additional information continues to come in. According to the report, all vehicles were east bound on K-18 along the Kansas River Bridge, when the first vehicle a 2008 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Willam Bratton Jr, 37, of Junction City lost control on the icy bridge and struck a 2009 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Donald Phillips, 50, of Junction City.  A third vehicle, a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Roger Wilcoxson, 63, of Clay Center, also struck both vehicles and came to rest along the bridge.…

On Friday, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced they will no longer provide funding for 149 contract air traffic control towers beginning April 7, 2013. The tower at the Manhattan Regional Airport (MHK) is on the list to no longer receive funding. Other Kansas Air Traffic Control facilities on the list include: Philip Billard Municipal in Topeka; Hutchinson Municipal in Hutchinson; New Century Air Center in Olathe; and Johnson County Executive in Olathe. The snow has moved out of the area and the digging out has begun for Northeast Kansas. The National Weather Service office in Topeka reports that Manhattan officially recorded four and a half inches of snow while other parts of Riley County fell in the two to three inch range. Amounts of snow were lighter to the North and West of Manhattan while they were heavier to the South and East. Emporia received five inches of snow while Topeka recorded six inches, but just to the East of Topeka amounts up to eight and a half inches were reported. For…
