Nearly a dozen Riley County police officers were recognized at Monday’s law board meeting, in connection with response to a fatal shooting incident at 900 Gardenway April seventh. Meritorious service, commendation, and distinguished service awards were presented, with RCPD Director Brad Schoen praising those recognized. Schoen added this is what the officers are trained to do. Courthouse Plaza East, in downtown Manhattan, is where the Riley County Commission meets every Monday and Thursday. The building is also utilized by various departments, but the third floor currently has vacant space. This was a topic of discussion during Monday’s meeting, as Public Works Director, Leon Hobson led the discussion. A possibility for at least a portion of the space would be a break room. The unemployment rate in the Manhattan metro area went up a little bit. The July numbers for the metro area, which includes Riley, Pottawatomie, and Geary counties shows a six percent rate, compared to 5.7 the month before and 5.9 last year at the same time. The city of Manhattan by itself is 5.1 percent, up from June’s 4.9 percent and last year’s five percent. Other area county rates include Riley at 5.2, Pottawatomie at 5.8, Clay at 5.3, and Geary, which always tends to be a bit higher was 7.8 percent. The Manhattan metro area’s six percent is still…
Dozens of motorcycles were on area roads this past weekend, with the Junction City Harley Owner’s Group holding its annual poker run and scavenger hunt, with proceeds going to the Muscular Dystrophy association. $2,800 was raised. Debbie Auld serves as the group’s assistant director and says the Junction City group has members from throughout Kansas, including Wichita, Salina, Manhattan, Wamego, Marysville, Manhattan, and Riley. The motorcycles began their Sunday route in Junction City, travelling through Riley and Pottawatomie Counties before ending up back in Grandview Plaza.
The longest tenured men’s golf coach in the Big 12 conference, K-State’s Tim Norris announced his retirement at the end of the 2013-14 season during Sunday night’s Colbert-Fogler benefit. Norris took over a Wildcat program in 1997 that hadn’t finished in the top half of its conference in 28 years, and led it to four NCAA regionals during his tenure. He oversaw the opening of Colbert Hills Golf Course, along with a new clubhouse and training facility. The National Science Foundation has named Kansas State University as its lead institution for the world’s first Industry/University Cooperative Research Center on wheat. The premier center, named the NSF I/UCRC Wheat Genetics Resource Center, is the first National Science Foundation-established research center for any crop plant. The center will focus on improving the food production and disease resistance of wheat and other crop plants, as well as serve as a training hub for graduate students and young researchers. DETROIT (AP) Miguel Cabrera hit his 40th home run and had an RBI single to help Max Scherzer become baseball’s first 18-game winner this season as the Detroit Tigers beat the Kansas City Royals 6-3 to win the five-game series. The reigning Triple Crown winner became the third player since 1921 to have at least 40 homers and 120 RBIs while batting .350 or better through 116 games. 27 area residents gathered at Fancy Creek Shooting Range, Sunday afternoon, to Sight their rifles in preparation for the 11th annual Tuttle Creek Youth/ADA Deer Hunt. During the afternoon, hunters participated in a safety orientation, practiced their shot, and dug into a bbq pork supper. Participants were also paired with experienced hunters, who will serve as individual guides during the main event. Other items provided for this hunt include accessible hunting blinds, hunting locations, hunter orange hats and vests, transportation to the field, and arrangements have been made with area lockers to provide basic processing of harvested deer free of charge.
