TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) An evangelical minister who emphasizes the Christian roots of the U.S. will be the featured speaker at the 52nd annual Kansas Prayer Breakfast. The Topeka Capital-Journal reports that David Barton will speak at the gathering scheduled for March 27 in Topeka. Barton is founder of the Texas-based WallBuilders organization, an evangelical Christian group that supports a biblical view of U.S. history. Last year, the publisher Thomas Nelson withdrew Barton’s book, “The Jefferson Lies,” citing historical errors. ANDOVER, Kan. (AP) A child advocacy group has been awarded a major challenge grant for building a new children’s home in south-central Kansas. The Wichita Eagle reports that the J.E. and L.E. Mabee Foundation, a Delaware-based nonprofit, is providing $406,000 in a challenge grant to the Sunlight Children’s Advocacy and Rights Foundation. The foundation needs to raise about $480,000 more by January 2014 to secure the grant. The foundation has been trying to raise $2.5 million to build Sunshine Children’s Home in Andover for children from Butler, Elk and Greenwood counties who have been temporarily removed from their homes because…

With a threat of rain and an altered schedule, K-State’s weekend Baseball series with Cal-Poly was already in a jumble. The two teams had played a doubleheader on Friday which was swept by the Mustangs by scores of 10-8 and 6-2 and now they were hopeful of getting in a game on Saturday with cold wind and snow showers in the forecast for Sunday. The 9th-ranked Kansas State Men’s Basketball team went into their game Saturday at Oklahoma State with an opportunity to secure at least a share of the program’s first regular season conference championship since 1977 when Jack Hartman was head coach and players like Mike Evans and Curtis Redding roamed the court at Ahearn Fieldhouse. Riley County Police spokesman officer Mathew Droge says as of the 7pm briefing things are picking up due to the rain diminishing, but no major incidents have been reported.  A notable arrest included an early morning search warrant at a local hotel stemming from an initial investigation of  false identification.  A search warrant at the motel landed the suspect additional drug charges of possession of methamphetamines, and prescription drugs. At the time of the briefing the Riley County Police department reported 40 arrests, 203 reports filed, and 289 calls for service.  Charges were  mainly related to alcohol related incidents.  Those…
