Debora Howser has been named the Executive Director of Special Services for USD 383. Howser comes to USD 383 from Topeka Public Schools were she serves as a consulting teacher. Prior to that, she was the Director of Special Services for USD 372 in Silver Lake for five years. She has also been a special education teacher in several Kansas school districts. She has a B. Manhattan’s Sunset Zoo welcomed a new addition this week – a baby chimpanzee.  Born Tuesday morning at the AZA-accredited institution, the healthy baby boy is mother Hazina’s second offspring at Sunset Zoo.  Mom and baby can be seen by the public beginning this Saturday, March 2 from Noon to 5pm. As part of an ongoing investigation into the distribution of illegal substances in Riley County by the Police Department’s Special Investigations Unit, an arrest has been made. Jason Graham, 35, of Manhattan, was arrested in the 700 block of Diebler, Thursday on a number of different charges. Mark Mangino is back in coaching, just over three years after being fired at Kansas, and will step into a familiar place with an old friend.  Mangino, a Youngstown State alum and former assistant, has been hired as the assistant head coach and tight ends coach for the Penguins, where he will work for former K-State offensive lineman Eric Wolford.  Mangino coached Wolford as a player with the Wildcats from 1991-93, and they were on Coach Snyder’s staff together in 1995 when Wolford was a graduate assistant. (AP)   Kansas coach Bill Self says the Iowa State student government sent him a letter apologizing for a pair of incidents that occurred during the Jayhawks’ overtime victory over the Cyclones on Monday night. The sixth-ranked Jayhawks rallied in the closing minutes to force overtime before rolling to a 108-96 victory that left the crowd at Hilton Coliseum stunned. PEORIA, Ariz. (AP)   James Shields pitched a hitless inning in his Kansas City debut, and the Royals remained unbeaten this spring with a 5-4 win Thursday over the San Diego Padres. Shields was acquired in a big trade with Tampa Bay during the offseason. The new ace worked the first inning, then went to the bullpen to reach his pitch count. The Royals improved to 6-0-1. A well respected former leader of the first infantry division has passed away. KMAN has just received word that Command Sgt Major Fred Davenport, who served as the first infantry division’s senior noncommisioned officer from 1989 to 1994 passed away nearly two weeks ago at the age of seventy. Davenport served tours in Korea and Vietnam as a combat engineer. He served three assignments at Fort Riley before he was selected in July 1989 as the first infantry divisions senior noncommissioned officer. Davenport retired in 1994 after thirty years of service. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Sheriff’s detectives and health authorities are investigating the death of a 5-month-old baby at an unlicensed day care operation in southern Topeka. The Topeka Capital-Journal reports Shawnee County deputies were called to the facility Wednesday afternoon about an unresponsive infant. Deputies and firefighters administered CPR, but the baby was pronounced dead at Stormont-Vail Regional Health Center. The baby’s name had not been released Thursday. The Shawnee County Health Agency Child Care Licensing Program is looking into the case.

Kan. (AP) A new report says an off-duty Lawrence police officer who died in a one-car crash had a blood-alcohol content more than three times the legal limit for driving. The Lawrence Journal-World reports the Kansas Highway Patrol released its findings Thursday on the crash that killed Matthew Klock. The 29-year-old officer was alone in his Nissan Altima when it hit a traffic signal pole in western Lawrence around 2 a.m. on Jan. 2. He was not wearing a seat belt and died at the scene. The Highway Patrol says Klock had a blood-alcohol content of .259. The legal limit…
