Future capital projects and partnerships was the only topic of discussion during Thursday’s Riley County/Pottawatomie County/Manhattan City Commission meeting. Riley County submitted the topic for the agenda, as they have been looking into options as far as facilities, and extra space. Courtrooms are of a main concern, as there is talk of adding another magistrate judge in the future. “A giant step” is how U-S Senator Pat Roberts describes proposed funding for the National Bio and Agro-Defense facility, to be built in Manhattan.  Senator Jerry Moran serves on the  Senate appropriations committee, which has matched the U-S house’s proposed funding of 404 million dollars toward the facility’s construction. The two Senator from Kansas held a joint teleconference Thursday morning,  with Roberts indicating this gets us, along with the state’s contribution, about halfway toward funding the project. Two Riley County employees were promoted during Thursday’s county commission meeting.  The first was for the parks department and the second was for the health department. Both individuals were promoted to full time positions and will gain more responsibilities. ————- The commission did take action on a few purchase authorizations for the noxious weeds department.  First was a purchase authorization for a utility tractor and loader, and the second was for a no-till grass drill. Crews completed the K-18 bridge work Wednesday night and the lane closures for overnight Thursday and Friday  have been CANCELLED. All lanes of eastbound and westbound K-18 from east of Scenic Drive to west of K-113 (Seth Child Road) were CLOSED for bridge work overnight Tuesday and Wednesday with closures beginning at 7:00 p.m. and reopening to all traffic at 5:00 a.m. the next morning. This closure was needed for the setting of the steel bridge beams over the westbound lanes of K-18 which is currently carrying head-to-head traffic for eastbound and westbound K-18 traffic.

Defending Big 12 champ K-State picked up a first-place vote in the media preseason poll, but was tabbed to finish sixth in the league this season. The Cats are in a very familiar position after being picked sixth in the Big 12 before the 2012 campaign, before going on to win their second conference title in the last nine years. Kansas State senior running back John Hubert was named a candidate for the Doak Walker Award as the nation’s top college running back for the second-straight year. Hubert is K-State’s fourth two-time candidate, joining J.J. Smith (1993 and 1994), Darren Sproles (2003 runner-up, 2004) and Daniel Thomas (2009, 2010 semifinalist). A product of Waco, Texas, Hubert ranked fourth in the Big 12 in rushing at 947 yards on 189 carries last season, while he had 15 rushing touchdowns. Budget, a facility study, and acquisition of land were all part of Wednesday’s Manhattan Ogden school board meeting.
