KMAN received word of a possible suicide around 10:45 Tuesday morning. The incident is said to have taken place on the 800 block of Fremont, in an apartment. Riley County Police arrived on scene a few minutes later. The subject received a cut to the throat. Public Information Officer, Matt Droge could not comment, as officers had just arrived at the apartment. KMAN will continue to bring you updates as they become available. ———- Update It was confirmed by Droge on Wednesday morning, the incident was just an “attempted suicide”, and the victim sustained minor injuries.
Longtime Manhattan High volleyball coach Mary Lou Morgan put together a sterling resume in her 17 years on the sidelines, and was inducted over the weekend into the Kansas Volleyball Association Hall of Fame. Morgan won 499 matches during her career along with 15 I-70 League championships. She led the Tribe to 13 state tournaments, including a 6A championship in 1986 and a pair of runner-up finishes. Morgan also helped found the KVA in the early 1980’s. She retired from coaching in 1999, and teaching in 2004.
Eight high school state championships will now be handed out each year in football, volleyball, basketball, softball, and baseball in the Sunflower State. 64 member schools made up class 4A in the Kansas High School Athletic Association (KSHSAA) during the 2012-13 school year. 4A held a large range in enrollment between its members over the last year in all sports but football, from Highland Park with 729 students to Rock Creek and Frontenac with 258. The Kansas Legislature narrowly passed a two-year state budget in the waning minutes of the 2013 legislative session. State Representative of Manhattan, Sydney Carlin, says there was compromise on the budget, but she doesn’t think it was enough, saying “there was still one we could have taken but did not, but it is still a $777 million tax increase over the next four or five years”. For the first time in the history of the program, K-State football season tickets are sold out for the 2013 season. K-State is 2,400 season tickets ahead of last year’s pace, and student ISIS passes are also selling at a high level. K-State will get an extra day of preparation for their first ever Super Regional at Oregon State. The NCAA announced the Cats and Beavers will play game one of their best two-of-three series on Saturday night at 6:00pm central time in Corvalis, Oregon. Game two will be Sunday night at 9:00pm, and the series finale, if necessary, is set for Monday night at 6:00. Officials in Galena say a hospital that opened in February and created 80 new jobs has capped a decades-long effort to revive the city. (AP) The head of a group that represents Kansas emergency responders says it’s time to consider rules for storm chasers in the wake of the deaths of three professional chasers in Oklahoma. Three veteran chasers were killed Friday when a tornado turned on them near El Reno, Okla. Officials say the men’s deaths are believed to be the first among scientific researchers while chasing tornadoes. Brian Stone is president of the Kansas Emergency Management Association.
