MANHATTAN, Kan. (K-State Athletics) – The first All-American in Kansas State women’s golf history picked up another honor as Carla Bernat has been named a Third Team All-American by Golfweek. Bernat, who was named a Second Team All-American by the Women’s Golf Coaches Association of America two weeks ago, earned the exclusive honor from Golfweek as the publication only named 10 players to each of its first, second and third teams. Michael Skillern Lewis, 25, of Manhattan was arrested on June 6, 2024, at approximately 9:10 AM in the 1000 block of South Seth Child Road.  Skillern Lewis was arrested on a Riley County District Court warrant for probation violation.  The original charge was for attempted residential burglary. Total bond was set at $50,000. Skillern Lewis was confined at the time of this report. The Sunset Zoo’s beloved female chimpanzee named Susie celebrated her 70th birthday on Thursday. Zoo Marketing Officer Melissa Kirkwood explained why Susie’s birthday is so important… Susie came to the Sunset Zoo in 1974, and she far exceeds the lifespan of chimps in the wild which averages around 40 years old. Kirkwood says the expertise and consistency of zoo staff has greatly helped Susie … The Sunset Zoo troop of chimpanzees also includes Julian, Hazina, Hususa, and Koto. Zoo staff said that Susie acts as the group’s matriarch and the other chimps will listen to her.

A new principal has been named at Lee Elementary in Manhattan. The district announced Daniel Pray will move into that position, effective July 1. He has been the principal at Jackson Heights Elementary in Holton since August 2022 and was previously the MTSS Coordinator at Manhattan’s Anthony Middle School. He began his career as an elementary teacher at Rock Creek Schools. He holds degrees from Dana College in Blair, Nebraska and Fort Hays State where he recieved a Masters in Building Administration. By AJ Dome/Manhattan Mercury A Manhattan boy with a rare liver condition recently got a rare opportunity to meet the Kansas City Chiefs. The football organization welcomed 13-year-old Jude Fairchild to watch the Chiefs practice and join their team huddle May 28. Fairchild received a liver transplant last summer and has continued to receive treatment for his rare disease called progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis type 1, or PFIC-1, which is estimated to affect just 1 in 50,000 to 100,000 people worldwide. The Manhattan City Commission approved a resolution Tuesday night that establishes the Downtown Convention Parking Program for this year. Starting August 1st, the city will begin charging parking fees for the downtown garage. The action Tuesday will allocate transient guest tax, TGT, money to annually cover parking for conventions held in downtown Manhattan through the end of 2028. The approved resolution will allocate $115,000 to the Chamber’s Convention and Visitors Bureau and the commission has authority to change that amount every year.
