(AP) — The Kansas governor chose a high-ranking U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration official Friday to head the state highway patrol, replacing a retiring superintendent who is facing federal lawsuits over the agency’s policing and allegations that he sexually harassed female employees. Oxavier Ruffin, 22, of Manhattan was arrested on June 8, 2023, around 11:15 a.m. on his two Riley County District Court for probation violation and interference with law enforcement and one Manhattan Municipal Court warrant for motion to revoke diversion for the offense of driving while suspended. The probation violation warrant stems from original charges of two counts each of domestic battery and violation of a protection order. After five years of renovations and installations, the U.S. Cavalry Museum at Fort Riley is finally reopening its doors following a ribbon cutting ceremony next week. Museum Complex Director Robert Smith said it’s exciting to showcase, for the first time since 2018, the history of the U.S. Cavalry, which has a special tie to Fort Riley. A Manhattan woman who led police on a pursuit was arrested Wednesday, while a passenger in her car was issued a notice to appear in court after drugs were found in the vehicle. Riley County Police say 18-year-old Sarah White, of Manhattan, is charged with fleeing and eluding law enforcement, as well possession of drug parphernalia and marijuana. Downtown Manhattan Inc is bringing more artwork to the downtown area with the installation of two new art galleries on Poyntz Avenue. Downtown Manhattan Art Coordinator Heather Hnizdil. Hnizdil says the 409 Gallery is now open to the public and currently taking submissions from local artists. Downtown Manhattan Executive Director Gina Snyder says the new galleries fit well with the organization’s overall mission for the community. The Underground Collective Gallery is not currently open, but Hnizdil anticipates artwork will be installed by the end of next week. Artwork can be submitted at www.downtownmhk.com.
The City of Manhattan is continuing forward with various construction projects along Highway 24 East of Manhattan. City Manager Ron Fehr says there has been significant progress with the work being done on the US 24 and Levee Drive intersection. Fehr says residents can also expect workers to begin laying pavement on US 24 as far east as Excel Road. Fehr also notes the city is looking for consultants to assist with the US 24 East Manhattan Gateway Study to update the comprehensive plan and find ways to address land use and infrastructure issues as the area continues to develop.
