This year marked the 30th anniversary of the Martin Luter King Jr. Memorial Committee and their celebration. The event, held Monday in Manhattan Town Center, featured presentations, awards and performances. The 2013 Martin Luther King Jr. Award was perhaps the most prestigious honor awarded during the event. Committee Chairman, Reverend Jim Spencer received this year’s award, which was a big change considering nobody on the committee was allowed to win in previous years. 66th District Representative and member of the committee, Sydney Carlin said “after 30 years of keeping all of his together, we decided it was time to bend the…

While KMAN alerted you to his candidacy this past weekend, we had a chance to catch up with one of the last minute election filers for Manhattan/Ogden’s USD 383 school board. Aaron Estabrook reminds KMAN funding for education was one of the main issues emphasized in his last campaign for public office. Estabrook says he thinks his background also serves him well for a role such as school board member. Estabrook currently works for The Salvation Army as a Case Manager for Homeless Veterans across northern Kansas. He is a returning combat Veteran of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. On the heels of an eight-game winning streak, the K-State men are now on the cusp of the top 10. The Cats are up five spots in both polls, at #11 in the AP and #13 in the USA Today Coaches’ polls. K-State won both games they play last week, 67-54 at TCU on Wednesday, and 69-60 at home on Saturday against Oklahoma. The Cats are 15-2 and 4-0 in the Big 12 and will play #2/#3 Kansas in the Sunflower Showdown on Tuesday night in Manhattan at Bramlage Coliseum. KU is the only other Big 12 team in both…
For the fourth time in seven weeks, K-State senior guard Rodney McGruder has been named the Big 12 player of the week. McGruder passes first team all-American Michael Beasley for most weekly league honors in a single season for a Wildcat. Beasley was tabbed Big 12 player of the week three times during the 2007-2008 season. McGruder posted back-to-back 20-point scoring efforts in a pair of K-State wins last week. He scored 21 points, grabbed five rebounds, and dished out three assists in the Cats’ 67-54 victory at TCU on Wednesday night. McGruder hit four of nine three point attempts…
A former K-State Wildcat made a highlight reel play on Saturday afternoon in the East-West Shrine Game on Saturday afternoon in St. Petersburg, FL, but it wasn’t Collin Klein. Second team all-American cornerback Nigel Malone picked off former Louisiana Tech quarterback Colby Cameron in the second quarter, and returned it 30 yards to the house. The TD put the West up 21-3, en route to a 28-13 victory. Meanwhile, Klein did lead the East squad in rushing with 35 yards, but struggled throwing the football. He completed just 5 of 13 passes for 43 yards and an interception. Klein though…
The race for the USD 383 school board election has gained another candidate. Pat Hudgins filed for candidacy Friday afternoon, and becomes the fourth person to file for a race that has three open spots. Hudgins says that she initially tried for a vacant seat on the board last spring, but fell short. However, that experience really sparked an interest in what she could possibly do in the future. Her involvement in various classrooms in the area helped nurture that desire to do more, and Hudgins states that that same passion got people that knew her to encourage her to…
