SALINA, Kan. (AP) First responders from throughout the state are taking part in a two-day mass disaster exercise in central Kansas. The exercise Wednesday and Thursday brings together more than 230 people from city, county and state agencies, including the Kansas Highway Patrol and search and rescue teams. The event takes place at Crisis City, located at the Great Plains Regional Training Center near Salina. Crisis City is operated by the Kansas Division of Emergency Management. Among its training sites are a collapsed building, piles of rubble, a simulated rail disaster and a high-angle rescue tower.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Kansas legislators plan to resume negotiations on tax issues following House rejection of a proposal to set the sales tax at 6 percent in July. But House and Senate negotiators were still waiting to schedule talks Wednesday. They’re still trying to resolve the differences between the two chambers on legislation following up on massive income tax cuts approved last year. The first 2014 Manhattan city budget and capital improvement program city commission work session on Tuesday night unveiled a few of the battle lines drawn in the sand by the commission. Manhattan Director of Finance Bernie Hayen presented the first round of information on the city budget, and prefaced it by informing the commission on the growth the city has gone through in recent years. Manhattan saw a 5.5 percent growth change from 2010 to 2012, and ranked 15th in the nation in a recently released report from the U.S. Census Bureau.
