WINFIELD, Kan. (AP) Cowley College in Winfield will continue banning concealed weapons inside its buildings and residence halls officials study how to implement a new Kansas law. The law taking effect July 1 prohibits most public entities from banning concealed firearms in their buildings unless the buildings have adequate security. But it also lets public universities and junior colleges such as Cowley exempt themselves for four years. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) The Kansas House has rejected a plan for cutting personal income taxes further and setting the state’s sales tax at 6 percent in July to prevent budget shortfalls. The vote Tuesday was 71-42 against the measure. Republican legislative leaders said they’re not sure of their next step. The measure was drafted by House and Senate negotiators to reconcile differences on legislation following individual income tax cuts enacted last year. Republican Gov. Sam Brownback wants to raise new sales tax revenues to stabilize the budget. The tax is 6.3 percent but is set by law to drop law…

Three men are wanted for questioning by the Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office in connection with a theft at the local Walmart. Last Tuesday, two white males who appear to be in their 20’s to early 30’s entered the Wal-Mart store located on Bluemont Ave. While the two suspects were in the store they stole Apple I-pads from the electronics department which they placed into camping chair bags. The two left the store without paying for the items and got into a truck which had pulled up at the front exit of the store. Upon exiting they placed the bags into the bed…

As previously announced Hibachi Hut is leaving Aggieville but the popular restaurant is staying in Manhattan. That was the announcement Tuesday afternoon by part owner Kale Becker. Becker says Hibachi Hut’s doors were closed Sunday night, with the lease bought out by an owner who will be moving the restaurant to a building downtown. Brenda and Ward Morgan have purchased the name, recipes, and a lot of the decor of Hibachi Hut for the new location. The ceremonial groundbreaking was for the faciliy’s central utility plant, which will provide the lab with things such as backup generators and chilled water. The name of a man injured in a window washing accident at Geary Community hospital this past weekend has been released. David Vanbebber Jr. of Riley was first treated at Geary Community hospital, but then transferred to Stormont-Vail in Topeka, for surgery on his back. Geary County Sheriff Tony Wolf indicated Monday the man fell three to four stories during the Monday morning accident. Vanbebber suffered what Wolf called very serious injuries. The sheriff says the man was wearing a rope harness at the time, and it wasn’t immediately clear how or why he fell.
