News stories making national headlines were brought up at Monday’s Riley County Law Board meeting, with a question to Riley County Police Director Brad Schoen regarding the local policy when working with schools on such disasters as the multiple shooting fatalities in a Connecticut elementary school. Schoen indicated his department continues to talk individually to teachers and students, and also at the district level–and have done everything they can in regard to preparation. Though they were one commissioner down, as Gary Yenzer, commission chair was not available, there were still a number of items to take care of on the agenda Monday. The weekly update for the new Justice Center in Pottawatomie County again brought news of continuous work. Trisha Brooke-Fruent, construction manager for SMH Consultants, talked to the commissioners that even though the masonry company is no longer on the project, things are looking to be on schedule. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) A 19-year-old Topeka man who was left a paraplegic after an accident that killed a passenger in his car is scheduled to be sentenced to prison this week. Hunter Hillmer is scheduled to be sentenced Thursday for reckless second-degree murder for a March 19 accident that killed 15-year-old Madison Naill. He also was convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol and aggravated battery for injuries sufferd by a second passenger. EMPORIA, Kan. (AP) Holiday artwork from famous children’s book illustrators is on display at Emporia State University. A show called “Illustrating the Holidays” will remain on display through Jan. 25. It features holiday greetings sent to the late children’s book editor May Massee. Before retiring in 1960, she published titles such as “Make Way for Ducklings, ”Madeline and the Gypsies,” “Corduroy,” and “Pippi Longstockings.” The “Illustrating the Holidays” exhibit will draw from a collection of original book illustrations and other items from Massee’s career, which are housed at Emporia State. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Kansas legislators are planning to introduce measures during the 2013 session to create oversight of the state’s new KanCare Medicaid system. House Rep. David Crum and Sen. Mary Pilcher-Cook are expected to announce their plans Monday during a Statehouse news conference. KanCare is the new federally approved system for Medicaid in Kansas, providing health care services to the poor and disabled. Lawmakers will propose creating an oversight panel to which KanCare officials will report regular progress on the system. OLATHE, Kan. (AP) A former Kansas City area resident now lives in Newtown, Conn., and says the last few days have been especially difficult. Lillian Davis Bittman graduated from Shawnee Mission South High School in 1979. She and her family have lived in Newtown since 1995. Her three children, ages 21, 17 and 13, all formerly attended Sandy Hook Elementary School, where authorities say 20-year-old Adam Lanza killed 20 students and six adults before killing himself Friday. New information has been released regarding an unusual automobile accident that occured early Friday morning. KMAN reported on Friday that Riley County police recieved a report that two people had not arrived to where they were supposed to be. Police conducted a search and found a vehicle in a ditch near Deep Creek Road. Riley County police told reporters on Monday that what happened was that around 2:29 a.m. on Friday,  Daniel McDowell (21) of 120 Butterfield Road was driving a blue 2012 Kia Forte south east on Deep Creek Road. (AP) — Sebastian Janikowski kicked five field goals, Darren McFadden rushed for 110 yards and the Oakland Raiders shut out Kansas City for the second time ever, beating the Chiefs 15-0 on Sunday. The Raiders (4-10) overwhelmed the undermanned Chiefs (2-12) to snap a six-game losing streak.  Sandwiched around those losses are a pair of wins over Kansas City, a rare bright spot in this disappointing season in Oakland.
