WICHITA, Kan. (AP) Police in Wichita are investigating vandalism to a life-size bronze sculpture in a city park. The city’s Arts and Cultural Services Division says a resident discovered the damage to the sculpture, called “Heritage Woman,” on Wednesday. The sculpture is more than 5 feet tall and is located in Heritage Park, behind the Wichita Sedgwick-County Historical Museum. Authorities say the sculpture was knocked off its base and broken in half. It’s not known when the damage occurred or how much the repairs will cost. KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback is proposing a $10 million initiative to boost mental health services to targeted populations. The initiative would direct funding to what Brownback called the most at-risk and challenging mental health patients to meet their specific treatment requirements. The program will not target residents who are receiving services through Medicaid. The Republican governor announced the proposal Thursday in Kansas City, Kan., with Shawn Sullivan, secretary of the Department for Aging and Disability Services. K-State made a run at the beginning and end of Wednesday night’s road tilt at Texas Tech, but the Lady Raiders were more consistent over the entirety of a 59-50 victory over the Cats in Lubbock. K-State jumped out to an 8-0 lead, but Tech closed out the half on a 27-9 spurt to take a 10-point lead into the break. AUSTIN, Texas (AP) Aaric Murray scored 12 points and West Virginia defeated Texas 57-53 in overtime on Wednesday night. Jabarie Hinds added 11 points for the Mountaineers (8-6, 1-1 Big 12), who won their first conference game since moving over from the Big East this season. Jonathan Holmes had 12 points for Texas (8-7, 0-2), which gave up a double-digit lead in the final 5 minutes of regulation, then scored only three points in the extra period. Three bids were submitted for the Riley County Health Department’s standby power system. Bids were opened and read aloud by Commissioner, Dave Lewis during Thursday’s county commission meeting. The first bid came from Economy Electric Incorporated from here in Manhattan for $45,036. D.L Smith out of Topeka submitted the second bid for $50,352. The final bid came from Electrical Concepts Incorporated out of Wamego for $49,955. The commission unanimously approved to send the bids for staff evaluation and recommendation. After 36 years, Manhattan Fire Chief Jerry Snyder is calling it quits. Snyder made it official Thursday, telling KMAN he’ll be retiring for the second and last time, effective February 28th. He says it’s been a great run. Snyder says he doesn’t have definite plans yet, but he definitely wants to remain in Manhattan. Snyder says he loves Manhattan and that it’s been a great place to work. Snyder joined the Manhattan fire department in January of 1977. He talks about how much safety has improved for firefighters. He remembers the Aggieville Fire of 1998 when he was shift commander,…
A case of pornography is being investigated here in Manhattan. A 14 year old female reported to Riley County Police, an unknown suspect sent her pornography through her Facebook account. This incident occurred sometime between November 1 and November 25 of 2012. The investigation continues.
