The 625th Transportation Detachment and the 378th Movement Control team were both recognized during Saturday’s Mobilization Farewell Ceremony and Reception at Manhattan’s American Legion. Manhattan Mayor, Loren Pepperd was present at the ceremony to share a few words and stress the importance of the soldier’s mission, and the importance of the support from family members and friends. Pepperd concluded his speech by saying, “God bless and come back safe!” Brigadier General Kenneth D. Jones also shared a few words. Rodney McGruder scored 26 of his 28 points in the second half as #25 K-State knocked off #22 Oklahoma State 73-67 on Saturday afternoon at Bramlage Coliseum in the Big 12 opener for both teams. In a pair of hotly contested games coming out of the holiday break, Manhattan High and Shawnee Heights each picked up a win in their Centennial League basketball double dip. The Indian girls outscored the T-Birds 16-4 in the fourth quarter to sprint away for a 51-35 victory, remaining undefeated at 6-0 overall and 2-0 in the league. There has been another entrant for the election to the Manhattan City Commission. Daniel Hogan filed his declaration of intention to run for the commission late Friday afternoon. Hogan says that running for public office was something the he has always wanted to do, and had been an item on his personal bucket list. KMAN news has finally learned the identity of the victim in last Saturday’s accident on Anderson Avenue. Carl Merton Schurle, 72, of Manhattan died from injuries in that pedestrian vehicle accident west of Manhattan Saturday morning. Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home in Riley announced funeral arrangements for Schurle early Monday morning, indicating he died from injuries in that accident west of Manhattan. A service is planned for Wednesday afternoon. The name of the driver involved with the accident has also been released. The U.S. Army Corp of Engineers held it’s annual eagle day event Saturday at the Manhattan Fire Station located at 2000 Denison Ave. Over one hundred people attended the event, which was split into two different parts. During the first part, those in attendance were treated to a presentation on bald eagles and their nesting habits by Dan Mulhern, who is a biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. COLUMBUS, Kan. (AP) A southeast Kansas man who sold a powerful painkiller patch to another man has pleaded guilty to a reduced charge in the buyer’s death. The Cherokee County News-Advocate reports 35-year-old David Tirrell, of Scammon, will be sentenced in February for involuntary manslaughter. He was initially charged with felony murder but pleaded to the lesser charge Wednesday under an agreement with the Kansas attorney general’s office. Tirrell admitted selling a Fentanyl patch last July 24 to 22-year-old Jordan Krokroskia. The younger man was found dead the following day at his Baxter Springs home. An autopsy showed he died…

The incident Friday prompted the lockdown of a nearby Catholic school as a precaution. It ended around 4 p.m. when the man gave himself up. MATFIELD GREEN, Kan. (AP) Friends are mourning an eastern Kansas man who died in a leap from a 393-foot communication tower when his parachute failed to open in time. The Emporia Gazette reports a funeral is scheduled in Topeka for 50-year-old Frank Hubbell on Saturday, one week after his death. Chase County Sheriff Richard Dorneker says Hubbell, of Tecumseh, died at the scene from the trauma of the impact. The accident happened in a rural area about seven miles east of Matfield Green.
