TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Incoming Kansas House Speaker Ray Merrick is keeping his predecessor’s chief of staff. Merrick’s office confirmed Tuesday that the Stilwell Republican has hired Christie Kriegshauser, who worked nearly two years for former House Speaker Mike O’Neal. Fellow Republicans chose Merrick last week to replace O’Neal when the 2013 session opens in mid-January. O’Neal, a Hutchinson Republican, did not seek another House term this year and is now the CEO of the Kansas Chamber of Commerce. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) A special council of Kansas officials is weighing a request for funds to implement the state’s new system for administering Medicaid services. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment is asking the State Finance Council to approve funds for the billing system for KanCare, the state’s revised Medicaid program. KDHE officials have not said how much they’re seeking. The Finance Council was scheduled to consider the request at a meeting Wednesday. The panel is made up of Gov. LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) Texas Tech has hired Texas A&M offensive coordinator and former Red Raiders quarterback Kliff Kingsbury to become the Red Raiders’ head coach. Kingsbury was offered the job Wednesday and Texas Tech athletic director Kirby Hocutt announced the news with a Twitter not long after. Kingsbury coached Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel this year and was the first in a string of record-setting quarterbacks for the Red Raiders under former coach Mike Leach. Just a few days after reports circulated that Kansas State Quarterback Collin Klein was unlikely to be selected to play in the Senior Bowl, we do know at least one Wildcat will be in the game. On Wednesday, Wide Receiver Chris Harper did receive an invitation to play the game which will be held on January 26 at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile, Alabama and televised nationally on the NFL Network. Numerous unlawful charges were made on a credit card around 10:45 a.m. Tuesday, resulting in a significant loss to numerous Manhattan businesses. Riley County Police reported a financial card fraud report.  Once checking the card’s records, it was discovered that numerous charges were made. The first victim in this incident was Best Buy.  Two MacBook Pro laptops, two trend micro internet security devices, a trend micro one year plan and an extended warranty were all charged to the card, for a loss of $5,328. All lanes of K-99 in Wamego in Pottawatomie County will be CLOSED for a Union Pacific railroad crossing replacement project beginning at 6:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 20 and reopening to all traffic at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, December 21, weather permitting.  A marked detour will be provided (see detour map below). Traffic will detour via US-24 to K-177 to I-70 to K-99. NOTE: K-18 will still be closed south of Wamego, so K-18 will not be a detour option. Drivers should expect some delays and must use alternate routes during the roadway closure.

For the second straight season, the American Volleyball Coaches’ Association (AVCA) named K-State middle blocker Kaitlynn Pelger an honorable mention all-American.  The Olathe junior is one of only four players at her position to play all six rotations as she totalled 361 kills, 273 digs, and 91 blocks.  Pelger was also named first team all-Big 12 and the third K-State player to be an all-American in back-to-back seasons.  Nataly Korobkova was a third team AVCA all-American in 2007 and 2008, and Liz Wegner (Busch) earned honorable mention all-America from Volleyball Magazine in 2000 and 2001.
