Just a week after one defendant was found guilty in connection with a fatal shooting in Riley County the end of last year, another defendant has entered a plea of no contest to reduced charges in connection with the same case in Riley County District Court. Michael Layne, 20, of Manhattan entered the plea Tuesday to charges of second degree murder, kidnapping, and aggravated robbery in connection with the December 2011 death of Steven Freel, 31. During the afternoon hours on Tuesday, a crowd gathered in Bosco Plaza at the Kansas State Student Union on the K-State Campus at what seemed a religious demonstration as a couple was out talking of their beliefs to the students.  Campus police were on scene for a while to make sure the demonstration was peaceful, which it seemed to be.  A few verbal sparring matches did ensue between students and the couple, but nothing developed from it. With several pharmacy burglaries and attempted break-ins reported in Riley County a few months ago, now Pottawatomie County is reporting such a case. The Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a burglary and criminal damage to property in Westmoreland at the Hoffman Pharmacy. Pottawatomie County Dispatch received a 911 call just before midnight Monday night. The caller reported glass being broken at the Pharmacy. Sheriff Deputies responded and saw broken glass around the front door. The Deputies were unable to locate a suspect inside the pharmacy or immediate area. Out of the millions of high school seniors across the country, Rock Creek’s Jacob Miller is one of just 100 students named a Wendy’s High School Heisman winner.  Miller and Haydn Herlocker of Girard High School share the Kansas honor. Miller is a three sport standout for the Mustangs in football, basketball, and baseball.  He was a three year starter on the Mustang offensive line, and also was plugged in on the other side of the ball this season, with 15 tackles.  Miller averaged 7.5 points and 10.5 rebounds for the Rock Creek state tournament run on the hardwood.  He also…

Brittany Chambers posted game-high totals of 21 points and nine rebounds as the K-State women’s basketball team won their final exhibition game, 75-42 over Washburn at Bramlage Coliseum on Monday night.  Freshman Briana Craig had 17 points, and Ashia Woods added 12.  The Cats started each half on a roll, opening with the first 11 points of the game, and posting a 19-2 run to begin the second half. October sales tax numbers were released Monday, showing an increase in Manhattan over the previous year, although not the highest ever recorded. Manhattan Finance Director Bernie Hayen indicates most of the larger retailers were either flat or declined from a year ago. However auto dealerships and grocery sales were both up about 10 percent over last year’s numbers. October numbers, which actually reflect two months prior or August, showed $905,589 in sales tax receipts, or an adjusted rate of $846,433 , $15,983 more than last year’s adjusted rate and well over the $774,000 in the budgeted amount.

After each player scored a non-offensive touchdown for K-State in last Saturday’s 44-30 win over Oklahoma State, both Allen Chapman and Tyler Lockett were named Big 12 player of the week.  Chapman received the defensive nod after picking off three passes including one that he took 29 yards back to the house from Wes Lunt late in the 2nd quarter to put K-State up 31-17.  Lockett was tabbed for special teams after he returned a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown. A Kansas State graduate student entered a not guilty plea to involuntary manslaughter and aggravated battery in Riley County court on Monday. According to blood alcohol testing released several  months after the accident,  Miles Theurer, 24,  was over the legal limit of .08 when his Chevy truck hit 31-year-old Elizabeth Young’s Buick sedan on K-18 on May 14th at 3 am.  Young and her passenger,  Micheal Stanley, 32,  were killed in the collision.  Three passengers in Theurer’s vehicle were also taken to Mercy Regional Health Center for their injuries, with two having serious injuries.
