The Flint Hills Discovery Center celebrated its first birthday on Saturday by hosting “Discovery Day 2013: Making a Difference”. The day featured several family-focused activities including: a three-floor scavenger hunt, recycling projects & educational display from the K-State Recycling Center, Flint Hills themed arts & crafts, and free admission. “What an honor it was to be able to help sponsor this great event. SALINA, Kan. (AP) Two of the leading Republican groups in Kansas are condemning a Saline County commissioner for using a racial slur in a public meeting. The Kansas Republican Party and the Kansas Young Republicans issued statements Thursday to the Salina Journal criticizing Commissioner Jim Gile. During a hearing last week, Gile used a variant of a racial slur to imply a job done sloppily or hastily. When asked what he meant, Gile replied: “Afro-Americanized.” The two GOP groups said Gile’s comments were offensive and did not reflect the party’s beliefs. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Gov. Sam Brownback has issued his first veto of a bill from this year’s legislative session. Brownback on Thursday vetoed a bill that would have made a board that regulates home inspectors a permanent board. Without the extension, the board will expire July 1. The governor said in a statement that he saw little evidence that large numbers of Kansans are being harmed by home inspectors. He says the board adds unnecessary fees and regulations to law abiding citizens. The Topeka Capital-Journal reports the board, which was created in 2008, is funded every year by about $15,000…
