LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) A Douglas County judge has rejected a former Kansas State University professor’s lawsuit challenging his prison sentence for killing his ex-wife. Thomas Murray is serving a sentence of 25 years to life for the stabbing death of 40-year-old Carmin Ross in November 2003 in her home in Lawrence. He filed a civil lawsuit in January challenging the sentence, claiming that his attorney did not properly defend him during his 2005 trial. This month has provided a number of announcements including- President Barack Obama’s budgeted $714 million for construction on NBAF, and the Kansas Department of Agriculture’s decision to re-locate to Manhattan.   A Fort Riley soldier has been indicted in U-S District Court on theft and fraud charges involving Social Security. U-S Attorney Barry Grissom announced Thursday that James Nickerson, 36,  faces charges of theft of public money, Social Security disability fraud, three counts of wire frad, and three counts of making false statements to the Social Security Administration. The crimes allegedly occurred from 2009 to 2011 at Fort Riley. The crimes can carry various penalties, with the wire fraud apparently the most serious, involving a maximum penalty of 20 years and fine of up to $250,000 on each count.

After about a month of speculation, with word of Manhattan’s Director of Parks and Recreation Curt Loupe on an unexplained leave of absence announced March 15th, the city of Manhattan has indicated that Loupe is resigning his position, as of April 10th. Loupe began his employment with the city of Manhattan in November of 2006. The news release indicates Loupe relocated his residency back to Topeka last year for personal reasons, with Loupe quoted as saying he pledged to the city manager he would give him five years with this position, and he’s served more than six years. (AP)   Wade Davis pitched out of bases loaded jams in the first two innings, Billy Butler and Jeff Francoeur homered and the Kansas City Royals beat the Minnesota Twins 3-0 on Wednesday night to sweep the three-game series. The Royals have won four straight and six of seven to move three-games above .500 for the first time since May 12, 2011, when they were 20-17.
