TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Kansas is honoring two Topeka officers who were killed on duty last year by adding their names to the Law Enforcement Memorial on the Statehouse grounds. The state plans to remember their deaths during its annual Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony on May 3 outside the Statehouse. A candlelight vigil is scheduled for the night before at the memorial, on the northeast part of the grounds. Topeka police Cpl. David Gogian and Officer Jeffrey Atherly were shot to death in December while checking possible drug activity outside a supermarket. Their killer later was fatally shot by law enforcement…

The Geary County Sheriff’s Department report that Adam Guzman of Junction City was taken into custody shortly after noon Thursday after a high speed chase on I-70 and through Junction City. Guzman was stopped and arrested for aggravated assault felony fleeing and eluding, possession of marijuana, reckless driving, and driving while revoked. No bond information was provided.

The 15th and final spring practice for K-State football will be witnessed 10,000 or so of their closest friends during the annual Purple/White Spring Game this Saturday afternoon at Bill Snyder Family Stadium.  Wildcat fans’ interest will piqued by their first peek at the progress of quarterbacks Jake Waters and Daniel Sams as they battle to replace Heisman finalist Collin Klein. NEW YORK (AP) The Kansas City Chiefs have taken offensive tackle Eric Fisher of Central Michigan to begin the NFL draft Thursday night. Fisher became the first player from the Mid-American Conference taken to open the draft. He is the third offensive tackle picked No. 1 overall since the 1970 merger, joining Orlando Pace in 1997 and Jake Long five years ago. Fisher is the first selection by new Chiefs coach Andy Reid and general manager John Dorsey, who entertained trade offers before selecting the 6-foot-7, 306-pound Fisher over Texas A&M All-America tackle Luke Joeckel.

DETROIT (AP) Alex Gordon’s grand slam highlighted a five-run 10th inning for the Kansas City Royals, who rallied against the Detroit bullpen for an 8-3 win Thursday after Tigers ace Justin Verlander left with a thumb injury. The K-18 traffic switch has been completed in Riley County. This means that eastbound and westbound K-18 from 56th Avenue to just west of K-113/Seth Child Road have been moved to the new westbound K-18 lanes and are reduced to one lane in each direction for pavement reconstruction work. Drivers, remember to allow some extra time for your daily peak hour commutes for the next week or so until traffic adjusts to the new traffic configuration. All work on the K-18 Project is scheduled to be completed in the Fall of 2013.
