TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) A Shawnee County District Court judge has awarded the Kansas treasurer’s office the title to $880,000 in unclaimed U.S. savings bonds. Treasurer Ron Estes will hold the bonds while efforts are made to return them to their legal owners or their heirs. Estes said Monday that the federal government is holding more than $16 billion in matured savings bonds that are no longer paying interest. He estimated that $151 million of the total is owed to people whose last known address was in Kansas. Some of the bonds were issued as far back as World War I.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) Kansas filmmaker Kevin Willmott will speak in Lawrence next week about the Tuskegee Airmen and introduce a Hollywood drama about the black World War II combat pilots. The University of Kansas says Willmott will speak April 9 at the Dole Institute of Politics. There also will be free screenings this Tuesday of the film “Red Tails” at the Dole Institute and the Kansas Union. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) Franchise left tackle Branden Albert was the only player absent as the Kansas City Chiefs gathered Monday for the start of voluntary offseason workouts. Albert would have become a free agent this offseason had he not received the franchise designation from the Chiefs. He signed the contract worth $9.82 million late last month. CHICAGO (AP) Chris Sale outpitched James Shields, Tyler Flowers homered and the Chicago White Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 1-0 in the season opener on Monday. A dominant performance by Sale and Flowers’ drive leading off the fifth against Shields were just enough to beat a team that’s trying to make a big jump after finishing with a losing record 17 of the past 18 seasons. A man facing charges in connection with an October fifth Manhattan home invasion has entered a not guilty plea in connection with the case. Levertis Horne, 22, was in Riley County district court Monday for his arraignment and entered the plea. He faces a variety of aggravated robbery and battery counts, with K-State student Chase Cargile shot and wounded during the break-in. Horne’s next appearance is scheduled for July first, with a pre-trial hearing. The actual trial is set for July 31st through August second.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. (AP) Kansas court officials say up to 25 percent of the state’s court reporters will be eligible to retire in the next three years, leaving a big gap in courthouses. Many of the state’s current 132.5 court reporters are older, and even more are expected to retire in the next five to 10 years. Court reporters type the official record of legal proceedings, using a series of complex letter combinations to record up to 225 words per minute with 95 percent accuracy. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) A Topeka woman charged with helping her husband avoid arrest in the 2009 murder of a Kansas woman is asking to have the complaint dismissed. Rebecca Hollister’s attorneys have filed a motion in Nemaha County seeking dismissal of a complaint that alleges she helped her husband, Roger Hollister, avoid arrest after the murder of Patricia Kimmi, 58, of rural Horton. Roger Hollister died March 20 while serving a life prison term for Kimmi’s death. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) Wichita police say they have found no signs of trauma on the body of a man found during the weekend. Two children found the body Saturday afternoon near a drainage ditch in east Wichita. Sgt. Scott Brunow says the body has been turned over to the Sedgwick County Coroner’s Office and an autopsy will be performed. The man’s name has not been released.
KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) An eastern Kansas framing company, its three owners and four crew leaders have been charged in a 31-count indictment accusing them of harboring illegal immigrants who worked for the company. A federal indictment unsealed Monday accuses Advantage Framing, a Spring Hill company, of knowingly hiring illegal immigrants to gain an unfair commercial advantage.
