KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) A 14-year-old boy has been shot and killed after an argument in northeast Kansas City, Kan. Police identified the victim Sunday as Miguel Garcia of Kansas City, Kan. The Kansas City Stars (http://bit.ly/YM27Ym ) reports that the victim and another teenage boy were walking together Saturday afternoon when a sport utility vehicle approached them. An argument between the two groups ensued. The SUV then circled the block before its occupants opened fire, striking Miguel. He was rushed to a hospital, where he later died. A small transformer caught fire at the Kansas State University dairy unit at 10:30 Saturday morning, and was extinguished quickly by a Riley County fire crew. The fire caused little damage, but approximately 20 gallons of transformer oil spilled during the fire. Steve Galitzer, director of environmental health and safety at the university, said an absorbent material was put on the spill and a berm is in place to keep it from spreading and to protect the area in case of rain. The transformer was damaged beyond repair and will have to be replaced.

A Manhattan man has made his plea in a case of embezzlement. Larry Lord, 63, has pleaded guilty of embezzling more than $500,000 from Cheney Construction Incorporated, where he worked as an accountant. In his plea, Lord admitted to one count of mail fraud and one count of filing a false tax return. Lord used his position at the company to pay his own personal expenses using the company’s money. Lord wrote checks on CCI’s bank account and mailed the checks to a credit card company. To conceal the crimes, he falsified the company’s check register log to make it appear…
