TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Several Kansas food companies have been working to boost their export opportunities. The Kansas Department of Agriculture says in a release Friday that five Kansas food companies participated in a forum this month in Chicago where to develop business with representatives from 30 countries. The Kansas companies participated in sessions on free trade agreements, foreign market pricing and consumer preferences worldwide. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Topeka police say they discourage people who are confronted by burglars from taking matters into their own hands, despite recent incidents in which local residents did just that. During a 48-hour stretch earlier this month, two suspected burglars were arrested by police. The Topeka Capital Journal reports one of the men was brought to the ground by a victim and two neighbors, while the other eluded a pursuing victim but was nabbed by police. Police Capt. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) Former Fort Riley soldier Joshua Priest has been sentenced to 10 months in prison and ordered to pay $30,000 restitution for taking part in a sham marriage. Priest admitted this summer that he married a Jamaican woman so he could collect additional benefits from the military and so the woman could become a legal immigrant.

On Monday, department updates held the majority of the agenda ideas as the Lois Schlegel, county appraiser, Dustin Trego, managment assistant of operations, and Leu Lowery, public works director, were among those listed. For the appraiser’s office, numbers are sitting at about average with some a little higher and others a little lower, but Schlegel said that they are ahead of the number of sales for the year so far. October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month and the Riley County Domestic Violence Task Force took time to honor Kansas victims. Held at the Riley County Courthouse Plaza, dozens of victims of domestic homicide were remembered.  Individuals came forward to read stories of victims, of various ages, off of plaques.  Each plaque had a ribbon on it so that after the story was read, the plaque was placed on a silhouette to symbolize that person.  Some of the victims remembered were once members of our regional community. The Riley County Police department reported that a man was mandated to have a 48 hour stay in jail over this past weekend David Ray Lewis, 43, was charged with criminal trespassing that led to the mandate to be held without bond for 48 hours by the courts. Lewis was also charged with violating a protection order and possession of drugs. — Two different reports came in to the Riley County Police Department due to criminal damage to property over the weekend.
