Five players reached double figures in kills as K-State breezed through the first set against rival KU 25-13 on Wednesday night at Ahearn Fieldhouse.  But the Jayhawks claimed the season sweep in the Sunflower Showdown by winning the final three sets over the Wildcats, 28-26, 26-24, 27-25.  K-State (20-5, 7-5 Big 12) was led offensively by Courtney Traxson and Kaitlynn Pelger with 13 kills each.  Lilla Porubek contributed 12 kills, Kathleen Ludwig had 11, and Alex Muff added 10.   Setter Caitlyn Donahue had 53 assists, and Ludwig led K-State with 15 digs.  Muff and Pelger each posted five blocks. (AP)   The Houston Dynamo held off Sporting Kansas City after Seth Sinovic scored his first career goal in the second half, falling 1-0 on Wednesday night but advancing to the Eastern Conference finals with a 2-1 aggregate-goal result.  The Dynamo won the opening leg Sunday behind goals from Adam Moffat and Will Bruin, and then did enough on defense   just barely   to advance to its second straight conference title game.  Houston defeated Sporting KC last year to reach the MLS Cup finals.  The Dynamo will open the conference finals on the road against D.C.…

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP)   Chiefs quarterback Brady Quinn says he tried to play through a head injury sustained two weeks ago against Oakland, and admitted “that’s my fault for not being smart about it.” Quinn was speaking Wednesday for the first time since sustaining the injury Oct. 28. Police say the Riley County Police department’s Special Investigations unit is responsible for the arrest of a Manhattan woman on multiple drug charges. Kimberly Kilgore (25) was arrested on Wednesday night at near the intersection of Knox Lane and Casement road.  Kilgore was arrested for possession of methamphetamine with the intent to distribute, felonious possession of drug paraphernalia, and other drug charges. LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) University of Kansas researchers are receiving a $1.7 million federal grant to study climate change. The National Science Foundation is awarding the money over three years. It will help the university’s Center for Remote Sensing of Ice Sheets develop enhanced radar that can capture higher-resolution images of polar ice sheets. The ultra-wideband radar will provide more information on things like the conditions of the layers toward the top of an ice sheet. Radar images also help researchers study things such as whether there is water underneath, which can contribute to an area of an ice sheet moving…

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) An adult in south-central Kansas who became ill last month has been confirmed as the state’s first flu case of the season. The Kansas City Star reports the Kansas Department of Health and Environment announced the laboratory-confirmed case on Tuesday. Flu cases typically increase during the holidays and peaks around February. Last year’s flu season didn’t peak until mid-March was the latest on record in Kansas. KDHE says there’s still time to get flu shots.

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) A judge in Kansas has delayed the sentencing of a Jamaican woman convicted of entering into a sham marriage with a Fort Riley soldier to get legal immigration status. Shannakay Hunter will now be sentenced Dec. 3 instead of Nov. 26. U.S. District Judge Monti Belot ruled Tuesday that Hunter may appear for sentencing by phone from New York City, where she lives. Hunter was convicted in August of conspiracy to commit marriage fraud, marriage fraud and lying to the government. She faces up to five years on each count but is likely to get far less…

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) Kansas’ highest court has upheld a law prohibiting sexual contact between teachers and adult students. The Wichita Eagle reports that the Kansas Court of Appeals ruling stemmed from a case involving Charles Edwards. The former Wichita Northwest High School choir teacher challenged his conviction for having consensual sex with an 18-year-old student in his home in March 2010. Edwards was 30 at the time. Edwards contended that he should be held to the same standards as college professors. They’re not barred by law from having sex with students.
