Manhattan’s Rue 21 clothing store is shuttering its doors. The Manhattan Mercury reports that the local store inside Manhattan Town Center is having a liquidation sale, following the company’s recent Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing. A closing date hasn’t been announced. According to Reuters, the teen fashion retailer is planning to close all of its 543 U.S. stores within the next two months. Rue 21 also plans to sell its intellectual property. The Pennsylvania-based company has not issued any statement or commented publicly on the bankruptcy.

Woodrow Wilson Elementary is celebrating a century of educating Manhattan students. The Manhattan Mercury reports that the school will host an open house Thursday evening commemorating 100 years of teaching and learning. The open house will include a public viewing of the school’s new gymnasium and storm shelter and will also include food trucks, old photos of the school through the years and a chance for former students to celebrate in some of the nostalgia. A Manhattan woman is facing new charges of aggravated assault and criminal possesson of a weapon. The Riley County Police Department says 20-year-old Ladaisha Ransom was arrested at the jail Tuesday morning on the aformentioned charges. An online criminal complaint also alleges an attempted aggravated robbery charge, stemming from April 22. Ransom also was arrested April 30 for violating terms of her probation and was charged April 4 with drug distribution charges. RCPD says Ransom remains jailed on a total $30,000 bond.

Ladaisha Ransom, 20, of Manhattan, was arrested on May 7, 2024, at approximately 9:45 AM in the 100 block of S. Seth Child Road.  Ransom was arrested on probable cause offenses of criminal possession of a weapon by a felon and aggravated assault.  Total bond in this matter was set at $30,000. Ransom was confined at the time of this report. Two motorcyclists sustained injuries Tuesday evening after a crash on US-77 in Geary County. The Sheriff’s Office says Austin Davis, of Manhattan, was northbound on the highway near mile marker 157. While he was turning into a convenience store, his bike was struck by Tristan Baca, of Fort Riley. Both riders were transported to Stormont Vail for treatment of currently unspecified injuries.

Riley County Health Department and USD 383 are partnering together to kick off the ninth year of Camp Kindergarten. The program is designed to be a way to introduce young children to the kindergarten experience. “It is a kindergarten emersion program,” says Raising Riley Community Outreach Coordinator Chelsea Manwarren. “We are really working on getting those kiddos used to what kindergarten is.” Program activities include working through transitions, some learning, and snack times. The Manhattan City Commission unanimously supported the first reading of an ordinance for a long-term downtown development plan. The Beyond Tomorrow Downtown Plan is a 25-year vision for policy and development in the downtown area, replacing the current plan adopted in 2000. It will serve as a guide for future housing, zoning and commercial activity in the district. Tuesday’s action amends the current Manhattan Urban Area Comprehensive Plan.
