The Manhattan-Ogden School Board gave final approval Wednesday to move forward with the guaranteed maximum price of approximately $9.1 million for renovations at 901 Poyntz Ave, the Manhattan High East campus building. The project is the final facility to be upgraded as part of the 2018 voter-approved school bond. Board member Brandy Santos sits on the Facilities and Growth Committee, which she says worked feverishly over the past year to determine a best path forward. An Abilene man was arrested Tuesday on a pair of Riley County District Court warrants as well as an Ogden Municipal Court warrant, all for failure to appear. According to RCPD, the warrants against 39-year-old Alvin Mason, stem from his past failures to appear in court for original charges of criminal possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of an amphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, violation of the offender registration act, in addition to two driving violations. Mason remains jailed on a total bond of $201,000.
Riley County Police are investigating an aggravated battery that occurred Tuesday afternoon in the 2100 block of Mike Place in Manhattan. Authorities say a fight between a group of three 16-year-old girls was reported when two of the girls came over to the victim’s home, attacked her, knocking her unconscious. The victim was treated for injuries at Ascension Via Christi. Police arrested Keeghan Rayburn, of Ogden, and Scarlett Mercado, of Manhattan, in connection for aggravated battery. Both were released to guardians.
During their Tuesday meeting, the Manhattan City Commission approved executing an amendment and resolution for the construction and financing of the Aggieville Pedestrian Walkway between Rally House and Goodscents. The alley design also includes a dumpster enclosure north of Goodscents. Deputy City Manager Jason Hilgers said this enclosure is the first step in addressing significant trash problems in the district. Hilgers also notes that it will likely be beneficial to take action sooner rather than later, as space for a trash compactor is already limited.
The City of Manhattan will begin a pair of summer infrastructure projects that will cause some traffic disruptions near Grand Mere Village and Anthony Middle School. Starting Monday, Bayer Construction will begin replacing the roundabout at Grand Mere Parkway and Kimball Avenue/Scenic Drive. The intersection will be completely closed to traffic through the first phase of construction, with construction of a temporary fly-through route. The phase is expected to last through early August. The Manhattan City Commission took action on multiple agenda items during their Tuesday meeting. The board unanimously approved and authorized City Staff to amend the current Economic Development Agreement with the Manhattan Area Chamber of Commerce to include $250,000 for the Elevate Fund, a revolving loan program intended to assist locally owned businesses obtain early access to capital. Commissioner Wynn Butler said he had doubts when the request was presented in March, but with the current agreement requiring a yearly, in-depth report on forecasted revenues and expenditures before renewing the fund in 2024 and 2025, he felt comfortable authorizing the…
A North Carolina man, arrested last fall for traveling to Kansas to meet up with a child he met online, has been sentenced to prison. According to the Wabaunsee County Sheriff’s Office, 21-year-old Derrick Yarnell Mayfield was sentenced Tuesday to 41 months in prison. He’s required to register for life as a sex offender and has been sentenced to lifetime post release supervision. Police were alerted on Oct. 31 of a possible incident of child exploitation.
