October sales tax numbers were released Monday, showing an increase in Manhattan over the previous year, although not the highest ever recorded. Manhattan Finance Director Bernie Hayen indicates most of the larger retailers were either flat or declined from a year ago. However auto dealerships and grocery sales were both up about 10 percent over last year’s numbers. October numbers, which actually reflect two months prior or August, showed $905,589 in sales tax receipts, or an adjusted rate of $846,433 , $15,983 more than last year’s adjusted rate and well over the $774,000 in the budgeted amount.

Belvue bridge connects Pottawatomie County and Wabaunsee County and after a little over 50 years, a discussion has started as to what should be done with this failing bridge. During their Monday meeting, the Pottawatomie County commissioners had a work session to discuss the options before them for Belvue bridge. Mori El-aasar, structural engineer with BG Consultants, presented three different options for the commission to consider. The first was to re-deck the bridge with a light weight concrete. This option would have a life expectancy of about 25 years, but would not solve the fracture critical designations of the bridge. The second option…
LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) A big dig in downtown Lawrence has failed to unearth any unmarked graves from the Civil War. The Lawrence Journal-World reports the excavation took place Monday on the future site of a multistory hotel and parking garage. The state archaeologist for Kansas, Bob Hoard, was on hand. Hoard says the dig revealed some bones from cows and pigs, along with two cisterns and the outline of an old building. In a 1903 master’s thesis, a University of Kansas student wrote that victims of Quantrill’s Raid were dumped in a trench on the property. But Hoard says he…
