Wamego’s electric rates topped the agenda list at Tuesday’s City Commission meeting. City Manager Merl Page reminded the Commission back when the City renegotiated the contract for wholesale power supply, a decision was made to have regular rate reviews. He said a review has been in the works for the last several months, and the preliminary report found the revenue requirements are 7 to 8 percent greater than current levels. A contract for 40 million dollars toward utility work at the National Bio and Agro defense facility to be built in Manhattan reportedly has come through. U-S Senator Jerry Moran of Manhattan made that announcement Tuesday, indicating the Senate Appropriations committee he serves on had just received news of the contract award. There had been a bit of a hold-up, with the committee appropriating the funding, but Homeland Security taking its time giving its official okay. The Manhattan City Commission meeting on Tuesday night saw the passing of several rezoning measures to allow new construction projects to go forward.  However, it was the final general agenda item that caused some debate. The commission considered a new initiative which would allow a proposed daycare program to be held at the Sunset Zoo Nature Exploration Center. Commissioner Wynn Butler said he considered it a bad idea to get the city involved in the project due it exhibiting traits beyond what was initially envisioned for the center.  Butler called it “mission creep”, and said he doubted the initial voters envisioned running a…

The MHS girls raced out to a 10-2 lead in the first quarter over Hayden but couldn’t overcome 21 turnovers in a 56-43 loss. Hayden had built a ten point lead by halftime after going on a 21-4 run starting midway through the first quarter. The Wildcats then led by as many as 18 in the second half before Manhattan rallied to cut the deficit to 46-40 in the fourth quarter. (AP) Kansas City officials say one of two people who were missing after an explosion destroyed a restaurant has been found but the search continues for a woman who worked there. Kansas City Fire Chief Paul Berardi said early Wednesday that a man who was reported missing was found at St. Luke’s Hospital receiving treatment. He says there has been no sign of the female employee since the explosion Tuesday evening at JJ’s restaurant on the Country Club Plaza. COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) Authorities say a woman found dead in a Colorado motel was an Army corporal from Fort Riley, Kan., and another soldier believed to be her boyfriend is being held in North Carolina on suspicion of murder. Police said Tuesday that Kimberly Walker had been strangled and had a blunt force injury. She was found Sunday in a Colorado Springs motel. Army Sgt.
