SALINA, Kan. (AP) A chemical odor that caused headaches in a north Salina neighborhood has been traced to a 55-gallon drum inside a shed. But the substance inside the drum remained a mystery Wednesday. The Salina Journal reports firefighters went to the area Tuesday evening but were unable to pinpoint the odor. Several residents were evacuated as a precaution, and Kansas Gas Service crews worked through the night but also couldn’t find the source. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) A 59-year-old Wichita man has pleaded guilty to robbing a bank in the city earlier this year. Federal prosecutors in Wichita say Donald R. Young pleading guilty Tuesday to robbing a Wells Fargo Bank on Feb. 10. The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Department arrested Young shortly after the robbery. He faces up to 20 years in federal prison and a $250,000 fine when he’s sentenced Dec. 17.
Riley County Police were called to the Regency Inn located at 419 Holiday Dr for a report regarding alleged prostitution. Upon arrival, a search warrant was issued for two rooms, and three arrests were made. Arrested were: Cassandra Geotcha, 23, of Wichita. During Thursday’s Riley County Commission meeting, Commissioners heard from County Counselor, Clancy Holeman regarding the draft resolution pledging the general purposes for the revenue from the proposed half cent sales tax. Holeman explained this resolution will better explain the tax and all it concerns. He added no official decisions can really be made until the sales tax is approved. After reviewing the resolution, commissioners decided to go through with it and Holeman will bring the final draft to next Thursday’s commission meeting for signatures and approval. For the first time in two seasons, K-State has a men’s basketball player on the five-member preseason all-Big 12 team. Rodney McGruder averaged 15.8 points and 5.2 rebounds per contest for the Wildcats, and shot 46 percent from the field, 39 percent from three point range, and 80 percent from the free throw line. A Manhattan man was taken to the hospital following a one vehicle accident on McDowell Creek Road Wednesday evening. According to Riley County Police, Kenneth Upton, 35, was taken by ambulance to the Geary Community Hospital, with a possible head injury. Upton was driving a 1990 gray Dodge Ram southbound in the 4800 block of McDowell Creek Road when the vehicle left the roadway on the west side and hit a fence and tree. Alcohol and speed are listed as possible factors, with the Kansas Highway Patrol investigating the alcohol aspect. A condition report on Upton was not available.
A status hearing for a Fort Riley soldier charged with the shooting of a Kansas National Guard member was held on Thursday morning at the Riley County court house. Daniel Parker is charged with the first degree murder of 21-year-old Frederick Beverly on New Year’s Day near a local motorcycle group’s Manhattan clubhouse. A two vehicle accident in Pottawatomie county injuries one woman Wednesday afternoon. 55 year old Ruth Milliren of McFarland was traveling on highway 99 six and a half miles from Wamego, driving a 2011 Toyota passenger car when she fell asleep, crossed the center line and struck a trailer attached to the 2003 Suburban driven by Morton Hight of Lecompton. The Kansas Highway patrol reports that Milliren was taken to Mercy Regional health center, where she was admitted for treatment. No other injuries were reported.
