Bruce Weber’s first basketball team at K-State will have to work their way into the top 25, as the Cats are receiving votes in the preseason USA Today coaches’ poll. K-State is “ranked” #30 in the poll, and is one of five Big 12 teams mentioned. Kansas is #7, Baylor is #18, and Texas is tied with Florida State at #24. Oklahoma State is also receiving votes. The K-State men will open the season with an exhibition tilt against Washburn on October 30th.

Numerous missing construction items and containers add up to a hefty loss for a Manhattan construction company. Riley County Police received a report of missing construction equipment Tuesday morning around 10:30 a.m. The victim in this case is Cheney Construction, located on the 1100 block of Hayes Drive. Ronald Cheney (58) reported numerous items were removed from a job site on the 4400 of Anderson Avenue by an unknown suspect. He believes the items were taken sometime between April and May of this year. Five construction storage containers were taken, for a loss of $20,000, and $17,000 worth of other miscellaneous construction items were taken…

Manhattan City Commissioners discussed possible parking problems in the near future in the downtown area of the city at Tuesday’s commission meeting at City Hall. Commissioner James Sherow suggested looking into the cost effectiveness of paid meters to help improve business traffic flow in the area. Assistant City Manager Jason Hilgers says the idea was considered before, but they have some issues up front with initial set up costs and maintenance. Wamego received several good grades recently. At Tuesday’s City Commission meeting, City Manager Merl Page introduced Reese and Novelly Auditor, Melanie Tuttle, who went over the City’s 2011 Audit Report. According to Tuttle, there were no material changes to the report, but there were two things that have been brought to the City’s attention in the past, with respect to several bank accounts held outside the City offices. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Kansas officials involved in drafting proposed science standards dispute an Emporia State University biology professor’s criticism of the guidelines as weak. Matt Krehbiel is the state Department of Education official overseeing work on the standards for Kansas public schools. Krehbiel said Tuesday the goal is to concentrate on important core, scientific concepts. And State Board of Education Chairman David Dennis said he thinks the work is moving in the right direction. VALLEY CENTER, Kan. (AP) The Wichita suburb of Valley Center is making last-minute preparations to host the granite replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. KAKE-TV reports the famous “Moving Wall” will be escorted by American Legion riders Thursday morning into Valley Center’s Lions Park. The memorial will be open 24 hours a day until it leaves Monday afternoon. The half-size replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., has been touring the country for more than 20 years. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) A Topeka man has been charged with trying to smuggle $150,000 in cash from Bagram Air Field in Afghanistan to Kansas. The government alleges in a criminal information filed Tuesday that Donald Garst, 50, tried to evade currency reporting laws in May 2011 by concealing cash in a DHL shipping box for transport to Topeka. The U.S. attorney’s office says Garst was formerly with the Army National Guard, but was working as a private contractor in Afghanistan at the time. ARKANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) State Sen. Steve Abrams of Arkansas City says he plans to run for president of the Kansas Senate. Abrams, a Republican who has represented the 32nd District since 2008, says he would champion conservative principles if he is chosen Senate president. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) A Topeka lawyer faces federal charges for stealing more than $460,000 from his clients. U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom says in a release that Robert M. Telthorst, 52, is charged with one count of wire fraud and one count of money laundering. He’s accused of taking clients’ money for his own use from 2005 to August 2011. Online court records don’t list a lawyer for Telthorst. He faces up to 20 years in federal prison and a $250,000 fine on the wire fraud charge and up to 20 years and a $500,000 fine for money laundering charge.
