Sunset Zoo is looking forward to warmer weather and spring activities, one of which is taking place this weekend. Sunset’s Marketing and Development Officer Melissa Kirkwood spoke with KMAN about the upcoming Sensory Safari program that’s geared towards kids ages 3 to 5. March also means it’s time for spring break, and the zoo is extending its hours that week so the influx of visitors will have plenty of time to see the animals. Approximately 6 months ago, an online database called MHK Mental Health publicly launched to better connect community members to a wide range of mental health providers and resources. Psychologist and Founding Member of MHK Mental Health Dr. Sarah Wesch spoke with KMAN about creating this database to streamline referral processes. Wesch says people can now easily look through approximately 150 providers to find availability and support that fits their needs. The database and other resources can be found at mhkmentalhealth.org. All website services are free and open to the public with providers located in Manhattan and surrounding areas.
During their Tuesday work session, Manhattan City Commissioners discussed a possible contract with Baker Tilly and Virchow Krause accounting and consulting firm to review the city’s development processes and economic policies and develop implementation plans for housing initiatives. Deputy City Manager Jason Hilgers said the firm’s outside perspective and experience across the country would greatly benefit the city. Hilgers also said the current development process is cumbersome and in need of review, but Commissioner Wynn Butler feels the firm’s fee of $100,000 is too high. Three incidents involving thefts of catalytic converters were reported over the weekend to the Riley County Police Department. According to Monday’s activity report, the first incident occurred Friday afternoon in the 400 block of North 16th Street. The estimated total loss was around $830. A second theft was reported Friday evening at Manhattan Town Center, totaling around $2,000. The third incident was reported Sunday in the 700 block of Denison. In that case, the estimated total loss was around $600. Police are asking anyone with information regarding these thefts to contact RCPD or Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers.
An 18-year-old Manhattan man is jailed for attempted arson. According to the Riley County Police Department, Joseph Bauer Jr. is accused of throwing a piece of clothing onto a stove and turning it on, in an attempt to set it on fire. The item was removed by a separate party before it became inflamed. Bauer remains jailed on a $3,000 bond.
