Kansas State University has named Chris Culbertson dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, effective May 14. Culbertson has served as interim dean for the past year as well as professor of chemistry and associate dean of research and graduate studies in the college. He was appointed by Provost Charles Taber. As the new dean, Culbertson will lead all academic programs and serve as chief academic and administrative officer within the college. (AP) — Kansas’ governor and top state lawmakers were to meet Thursday to consider a proposed legal settlement between the state and the owner of a Wichita fitness studio forced to shut down during the first months of the coronavirus pandemic and then operate under restrictions. K-State alum Eldon Gideon has given a gift to name the deanship in the Kansas State University College of Agriculture, the fourth such named deanship at the university. The Eldon Gideon Deanship will be transformational for the college and future agriculture students, according to K-State officials, who say the funds will empower the dean to take advantage of emerging opportunities and recruit outstanding faculty and students. Kansas Governor Laura Kelly took a trip out to Westmoreland on Wednesday to proclaim May as Kansas Beef Month. The proclamation was held at the Cross Country Genetics facility in Westmoreland. CCG specializes in bovine fertilization and embryo transfers, serving farmers and ranchers across the country. Kansas Secretary of Agriculture Mike Beam said the work being done at this facility has made great strides in the Kansas beef industry. A week after the City of Manhattan cut the ribbon on progress in Aggieville, the archway welcoming visitors into the district has gotten a refresh. Manhattan City Manager Ron Fehr informed the commission at Tuesday’s work session that “welcome to” would be removed before commencement ceremonies this weekend. As of Thursday morning, it has been removed. The incident generated a lot of buzz on social media last week, with some residents suggesting alternate phrasing to correct what appeared to be a mistake, such as “Aggieville Welcomes You” or “Aggieville Est. 1899.”

Officers responded to the report of an injury crash near the intersection of Anderson Avenue and Denison Avenue in Manhattan on May 9, 2023, around 10:34 AM. When officers arrived on scene they found a blue Honda Civic driven by Ciara Hovis, 22, of Manhattan struck a pedestrian, Kamri Younger, 20, of Manhattan. Younger went to Via Christi for treatment of her injuries. Hovis was issued a citation for failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.
