On Sunday, Riley County Police Department were called to the 3100 block of Heritage Lane for a report of a large amount of blood found in a common area of an apartment building. Very little is known at this current time, but RCPD is currently conducting a full investigation into the matter to include attempting to locate and identify the blood’s cause and source. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) A south-central Kansas elementary school teacher has been sentenced to probation for driving drunk in a crash that killed a speeding motorcyclist. On Friday, Judge Ted Griffith told Michelle Gottschalk she would face six months in jail if she fails to meet any of her probation requirements. The Wichita Eagle reported that those requirements include that she speak to students about the dangers of drinking and driving. The 28-year-old motorcyclist, Wade Titus, died hours after June 2011 accident in far west Wichita. His mother, aunt and fiancie spoke about how his death affected them during the hearing.…
TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Kansas officials say a fourth former patient at Hays Medical Center has tested positive for a strain of hepatitis C linked to a cluster of New Hampshire cases traced to a traveling hospital technician. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment announced the latest positive test Friday. The other three positive tests were reported last month. The KDHE says 474 people were potentially exposed to hepatitis C when David Kwiatkowksi worked at the Hays hospital’s cardiac catheterization lab from May 24 to Sept. 22, 2010. MISSION, Kan. (AP) A Kansas City suburb has been considering a ban on hand-held cellphones while driving. A proposed ordinance under consideration in the Johnson County suburb of Mission would allow people to talk on hands-free cellphones. But police would be able to pull over drivers who are holding phones within about 8 inches of their heads. The ordinance is before the Mission City Council’s finance and administration committee and will come up for discussion, possibly in November. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) Copper thieves tore out electrical systems at a Wichita industrial park, causing about $750,000 in damage. The theft was reported Friday at Kamen Industrial Park in Wichita. Police said the vandals stole about 2,000 feet of copper wiring. The Wichita Eagle reports that police received the call Friday afternoon after someone with the company found a large pile of heavy-strand copper wire on the ground. The Pittsburg Morning Sun reports that the magazine has also ranked Pittsburg State as highest among the state’s three regional universities in its 2013 Best Midwest Regional Universities list. LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) The University of Kansas is scheduled to host a naturalization ceremony Monday at the Dole Institute of Politics. About 100 prospective U.S. citizens are expected to attend the event Monday afternoon. The Lawrence Journal-World reports that the ceremony is an annual event and will be presided over by U.S. Judge John W. Lungstrum. University of Kansas Provost Jeffrey Vitter and Kansas business school dean Neeli Bendapudi will also be on hand to greet the new citizens.
