On Monday, department updates held the majority of the agenda ideas as the Lois Schlegel, county appraiser, Dustin Trego, managment assistant of operations, and Leu Lowery, public works director, were among those listed. For the appraiser’s office, numbers are sitting at about average with some a little higher and others a little lower, but Schlegel said that they are ahead of the number of sales for the year so far. October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month and the Riley County Domestic Violence Task Force took time to honor Kansas victims. Held at the Riley County Courthouse Plaza, dozens of victims of domestic homicide were remembered. Individuals came forward to read stories of victims, of various ages, off of plaques. Each plaque had a ribbon on it so that after the story was read, the plaque was placed on a silhouette to symbolize that person. The Riley County Police department reported that a man was mandated to have a 48 hour stay in jail over this past weekend David Ray Lewis, 43, was charged with criminal trespassing that led to the mandate to be held without bond for 48 hours by the courts. Three people were arrested following the execution of search warrants by the Riley County Police Department at Gardenway Apartments and the 100 block of East Poyntz Avenue in Manhattan. The warrants were in reference to the distribution of marijuana. Approximately 1 ¾ pounds of marijuana with a street value of $7,000 was seized along with drug paraphernalia and about 46-hundred dollars in U.S. Currency. JOPLIN, Mo. (AP) A 19-year-old Joplin man and his 16-year-old female passenger from Galena, Kan., are dead after a one-car crash three miles west of Joplin. The Missouri State Highway Patrol says Jon West was driving on Junge Boulevard at 6:45 p.m. Saturday when his 1992 Lexus left the road and struck a tree. West was ejected from the car, while his passenger, Journey Pate-Nourani was killed in the vehicle, which had caught fire. KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) Kansas City, Kan., police waited several hours outside a house where they thought a murder suspect had taken cover, but later discovered the house was empty. Police responding to a call and found a young man lying in a driveway around 4 a.m. Sunday suffering from a gunshot wound to the abdomen. He was taken to a hospital where he later died. KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) Police in Kansas City, Kan., are investigating a fatal shooting. Police say in a release that a man in his 30s was shot Saturday and died later at a hospital. The victim has not been identified. Sgt. HUTCHINSON, Kan. (AP) A group that advocates for renewable energy is targeting Kansas’ four U.S. representatives who are opposed to renewing a tax credit for wind energy production. The Climate + Energy Project, a Kansas-based nonprofit group, is trying to gather at least 5,000 signatures urging Reps. Tim Huelskamp, Mike Pompeo, Kevin Yoder and Lynn Jenkins to support extending the tax credit.
